Dover, TN – Montgomery Central High School’s Trey Burney scored 16 first-quarter points, December 28th at the Bill Craig Memorial Gymnasium in the second day of the Stewart County High School Christmas Classic, to help power the Indians past the South Haven Christian School, 64-46.
Among Burney’s 16 points in the first stanza for Montgomery Central (6-5) were four 3s, as the point guard finished with a game-high 25 points.
Lamont Smith had the other two Montgomery Central points in the first quarter, coming on two free throws at the 2:50 mark.
Smith totaled 15 points in the contest.
The second quarter would see South Haven get back-to-back buckets from Ben Hatcher to cut the Indians lead back to four points, 18-14, with 6:49 left in the opening half.
A three by Blake Bradley and a bucket from Smith got Montgomery Central back out to a nine-point lead, 23-14, with 5:09 left.
The Patriots would go on a 6-2 run over the next minute to get back to within five points, 25-20, following a bucket from Luke Dalton, but that would be as close as South Haven would get the rest of the first half.
The Indians out outscore South Haven 8-4 over the final 3:40 – including a three-point shot from the top of the key from Damarcus Brewer just before the buzzer for intermission to take a 33-24 lead into halftime.
The third quarter would see the Indians put together their best scoring period of the game, as they poured in 24 points – including two 3s from Dalton Perkins – and the final eight Montgomery Central points of the period coming in the final 56 seconds, as their press led to easy transition buckets and a 57-37 lead.
Perkins would finish with 10 points.
The final quarter would see the Patriots try to put together a rally, as they scored seven of the first nine points of the period to get back to within 15 points, 59-44, with 6:18 left in the game, but that would be as close as they would get.
Montgomery Central would go into it motion offense over the final five-plus minutes, to run time off the clock and work for layups, which led to the Indians limiting the Patriots to just two more points the rest of the way, while finishing with five points over the same span for the 18-point victory, 64-46.
