Clarksville, TN – The turning of the calendar brings the start of a new season as the Austin Peay women’s basketball team will open Ohio Valley Conference play with a 5:15pm, Saturday contest against Southeast Missouri.
The Lady Govs will look to put 2013’s end behind them with the first game of 2014.Austin Peay went winless in seven December outings, which included five games away from the Dunn Center.
In addition, APSU played what was against arguably the toughest portion of its schedule with the seven December opponents combining for a 62-27 (.697) mark against Division I teams.
Sophomore Tiasha Gray led Austin Peay with 11.4 points per game in December with junior Kristen Stainback adding 11.0 points per outing. Additionally, freshmen Tearra Banks and Beth Rates worked their way into the starting lineup during the month. Banks averaged 8.7 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while Rates posted 5.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per December outing.
Austin Peay brings a seven-game losing streak into Monday’s contest, equaling its longest losing streak of the 2012-13 campaign. Sophomore guard Tiasha Gray leads the Lady Govs in scoring (14.6 ppg) and assists (4.9 apg) and her 4.7 rebounds per game ranks third on the team Gray has led the Lady Govs in scoring six times this season and APSU is 2-4 in those games.
Five APSU players have recorded a double-double this season and a Lady Govs player has recorded a double-double in each of the team’s last three games.
Sophomore Jennifer Nwokocha’s 14-point, 11-rebound outing at Mississippi, December 30th, continued that streak and was her first career double-double.
Southeast Missouri opened OVC play with a New Year’s Eve loss to Belmont and brings a two-game losing streak into Saturday’s affair.
The Redhawks have matched the Lady Govs against common opponents this season, each defeating Southern Illinois and both falling to Wichita State and Western Kentucky. Southeast Missouri is 1-7 away from the Show-Me Center this season while posting a 3-3 record at home.
Senior forward Patricia Mack nearly is averaging a double-double with 9.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.
