Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team saw its losing streak reach four games, Thursday night, with a 71-59 home loss to Jacksonville State in Ohio Valley Conference action in the Dunn Center.
The loss dropped APSU to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in the OVC—it was APSU’s first OVC home loss this season. Meanwhile, JSU improved to 10-13 overall and 4-4 in league play.Playing without starting point guard Damarius Smith (ankle), the Govs could not find their offensive rhythm in the game’s early stages while missing his energy on the opposite end.
As a result, the Govs led just one time at 6-5 on a Will Triggs layup. Another Triggs layup tied the game at 10 with 13:15 left in half but JSU scored the next seven points and the Govs were never closer than five points the half’s remainder.
JSU, with Darion Rackley scoring 11 points off the bench, knocked down five three pointers in the first half to offset 41 percent (12 of 29) shooting and took a 35-23 margin into halftime. APSU shot a respectable 46 percent (10 of 22) in the opening half but eight turnovers and a woeful 2-of-11 free-throw shooting effort counteracted the floor shooting.
The Governors scored the first six points of the second half, cutting their deficit to 35-29, but could not maintain the offensive momentum as Jacksonville State pushed the lead back to double digits and kept it there much of the half, leading by 16 on a pair (55-39, 57-41) of occasions before the Govs made one final run, slicing the deficit to eight, 57-49 with 1:34 left and had the basketball. But an ill-advised pass led to a turnover, a steal and a Brian Williams layup with 1:14 left made it a 10-point game, 59-49, ending APSU’s hopes.
Brian Williams, in fact, scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half for JSU. Rackley finished with 15 and D.J. Felder 11.
Triggs led APSU with 16 points while Chris Horton had 11.
