Montgomery Central Indians rally comes up short in 54-51 loss to Stewart County Rebels

Montgomery Central High SchoolCunningham, TN – Down by as many as 16 points in the first half, January 22nd at the Thomas-Young Gymnasium, Montgomery Central High School’s boys basketball team had two shots to tie the game in the final seconds, but couldn’t find the mark in a 54-51 District 11-AA loss to Stewart County High School.

Montgomery Central (9-10, 5-6 District 11-AA) still trailed by nine points, 51-42, with 1:37 left in the game, but baskets by Lamont Smith and Alex Norfleet – sandwiched around two missed free throws by Stewart County – followed by a three-point bucket by Dalton Perkins got the Indians back to a two-point game, 51-49, with 48 second left.

Perkins would lead all scorers with 16 points.

Stewart County (5-14, 2-9 District 11-AA) would get two free throws from Ethan Brandon to push it back to a four-point lead, 53-49, with 31.7 seconds left.

Montgomery Central would miss a couple of shots on its next trip down the floor, but kept crashing the boards, and wound up drawing a foul sending Perkins to the line with 15.5 seconds left.

Perkins would knock down both, to make it 53-51, with the Indians fouling on the inbounds to send Dustin Keatts to the line for two free throws, with 14.6 seconds left.

Keatts would miss the first and hit the second to leave the door open for the Indians to tie the game with a last-second three.

Perkins and Smith would each get a shot off from behind the arc, but both were off the mark, and before they could get a third shot off the final horn sounded and the Rebels escaped with the three-point win, 54-51.

In the first half Montgomery Central’s shooting was about as cold as the weather outside, as they only managed four points in the opening quarter, as the Rebels build a 10-point lead after the first eight minutes of play.

The second quarter wouldn’t start off any better for the Indians, as they only scored two points over the first 4:31 of the period, with Stewart County build its biggest lead of the game, 16 points, 22-6, with 4:11 left in the first half.

The Indians would finally get their offense going over the final 3:29 of the first half – scoring eight points – to get the deficit back down to 10 points at intermission, 24-14.

Montgomery Central would care the momentum of the first half into the third quarter, scoring the first seven points of the period to get to within three points, 24-21 with 4:57 left in the quarter.

Stewart County would see the Indians get as close as two points, 28-26, after a bucket by Alex Wade with 3:38 left, but the Rebels would get back-to-back 3s from Patrick Craig to push their lead back out to eight, 34-26, with 2:35 left in the third.

But the Indians wouldn’t give up another point in the quarter to the Rebels, while getting a three from Perkins to heading into the final quarter down five points, 34-29.

The final quarter would see the two teams swap baskets for the first three minutes of the period, before Stewart County went on a 9-2 run to go up 10 points, before the Indians final run at the Rebels that came up three points short.

Montgomery Central returns to District 11-AA action January 24th, as they host Fairview High School.
