Austin Peay State University Governors Sports - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team looks to go 2-0 on the young 2014 season when the Govs host Chattanooga, 1:30pm, Saturday, at the Austin Peay Tennis Center.

The Govs rolled through Northern Kentucky in convincing fashion in last Friday’s season-opening tilt against the Norse.

Behind singles wins from senior Jasmin Ademovic (6-3, 6-2) and junior Aleksas Tverijonas (6-1, 6-0), the Govs seemingly picked up where they left off at the conclusion of the 2013 season that saw them earn Austin Peay’s first Ohio Valley Conference men’s tennis title since 1974.

“I was very pleased to get that first victory,” said head coach Ross Brown. “I saw some good things and some things that we needed to improve upon. I think we’re still working on getting better and getting our games in tune.

Austin Peay’s first 2013 spring season victory came at Chattanooga, a hard-fought 4-3 win that saw singles victories from Tverijonas, Sean Bailey and Dimitar Ristovski. The doubles point, a staple of head coach Ross Brown’s strategy, went to Austin Peay as well.

The Mocs are extremely young this season, with four of their top six in their first or second college tennis season. However, youth was served for Chattanooga its last time out against defending OVC regular-season champion Tennessee Tech, defeating the Golden Eagles, 4-2, in the Mocs home opener. The Govs bring a four-match win streak in against the Mocs, dating back to the 2009-10 season.

Chattanooga has another tough test Friday at 18th-ranked Memphis before journeying to Clarksville.

“This is a match, much like last year, where we’re still growing with our play,” Brown said. “Chattanooga was very good last season and we were fortunate to get by.”

Next time out, the Govs hit the road for the first time in 2014 with a Valentine’s Day skirmish at Southern Illinois.
