Essential Information for First Responders in Emergencies
Clarksville, TN – Recently the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), with the help of Senator Jim Tracy (R-Shelbyville) and Representative Curtis Halford (R-Dyer), launched the Yellow Dot Program.
Tennessee is the tenth state to adopt this program. It has been adopted as a way for emergency personnel to have essential information about one’s health during a medical emergency or accident.
When an individual enrolls in the Yellow Dot program they are given a packet. Inside that packet is a brochure of information about the program, a brochure where they can fill out their medical information, and a yellow circle sticker.
It is important that the individual updates the medical information periodically to provide the most assistance in the case that it is needed. After filling out the information on the brochure, the individual places the yellow bi-fold holder in their glove box and places the yellow sticker on the bottom left corner of the rear window of their vehicle (on motorcycles it is placed on the bottom left corner of the license plate). This signifies to emergency personnel that there is medical information in the glove box in case of emergency.
This has been proven very helpful in other states especially when dealing with individuals that have medical conditions. With bi-fold holder having a place to list medications, medical conditions, and allergies, medical personnel would be able to treat an individual without having to worry as much about the individual having an allergic reaction to something or it conflicting with a medication that is already in the individual’s system.
When this program is launched, the plan is to be directed towards the elderly and individuals with medical conditions. Later on, it will branch out to everyone that drives.
One major benefit of this program is that it is free to the individuals that want to enroll. All the individual has to do is go to an enrollment site and tell them they are interested in enrolling in the program. There is no limit to the number of packets that an individual receives. It is recommended that there be one in each vehicle that the individual owns.
There are three locations with the Clarksville Police Department that individuals can enroll in this free program. The information for the enrollment sites are included below. Individuals can go to these enrollment sites during normal business hours, receive a packet, and get enrolled in the program.
