Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

This weeks highlights include: 152nd Anniversary of the Surrender of Clarksville, Applications for Summer Pool Staff being accepted, and site added to the Teen Mentoring Program, Dream Chasers.

152nd Anniversary of the Surrender of Clarksville to be commemorated at Fort Defiance Interpretive Center

Fort Defiance Interpretive Center to commemorate the 152nd Anniversary of the Surrender of Clarksville

152nd Anniversary of the Surrender of ClarksvilleThe Fort Defiance Interpretive Center, located at 120 Duncan Street, will host a living history weekend to commemorate the 152nd anniversary of the Surrender of Clarksville, Saturday, February 15th from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Come see uniformed Civil War re-enactors from the 50th Tennessee Reenactment Group who will provide living history and musket firing demonstrations. Musket firing demonstrations will take place at 11:00am and 2:00pm on Saturday. Visitors can also tour the permanent exhibit which includes the 18-minute film, “Crossroads of Change 1861-1865”.

The surrender of Clarksville was a significant event in our Civil War history. Once Fort Defiance and the city fell, there was nothing to stop Union gunboats from capturing Nashville, which was the first Confederate state capital to fall to the North. Upon the surrender, the citizens of Clarksville endured four years of Union occupation.

Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department accepting applications for summer pool staff in the New Year

The Swan Lake Pool SlideThe Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting applications for lifeguard and cashier positions for the 2014 summer swimming season.

Applicants considered for hire will be interviewed and must pass a swim test. Once those steps are completed he/she will be put into one of the following 3 certification courses:

Course 2: March 24th-28th, 2014, Monday-Friday 8:00am – 1:00pm each day.

Course 3: March 24th–28th, 2014, Monday – Friday 12noon – 5:00pm each day.

Course 4: March 19th–23rd, 2014, Wednesday – Friday 3:00pm – 8:00pm each day. Saturday 8:00am – 4:00pm, and Sunday 12noon – 6:00pm.

The courses will be filled in the order listed and up to 10 participants will be put in each.

Applications can be submitted at the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Main Office, located at 102 Public Square, between the hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm, and the Indoor Aquatic Center, located at 166 Cunningham Lane.

Site added to the Teen Mentoring Program, Dream Chasers!

Clarksville Parks and Recreation’s Dream Chasers Group Mentoring Program will now be available at all three Community Center locations! Dream Chasers is focused on helping at-risk youth, ages 13-17 in a small group atmosphere. Small group leaders, guided by professionals, will mentor youth as they discuss dealing with negative influences that affect teens and will promote making healthy and informed decisions.

The Dream Chasers program will now meet Tuesday’s, 3:00pm-4:00pm, at the Kleeman Community Center, Wednesday’s, 4:30pm-5:30pm, at the Burt Cobb Community Center, and Thursday’s, 3:00pm-4:00pm, at the Crow Community Center. Free pizza and drinks are provided to participants each week courtesy of Domino’s Pizza.  This program is free with a community center ID.
