APSU Lady Govs Softball opens 2014 home schedule Saturday against IUPUI

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will open the home part of its 2014 regular-season schedule this Saturday and Sunday at Cheryl Holt Field with a three-game series versus IUPUI.

The series versus the Jaguars will begin with a noon doubleheader on Saturday and conclude with a single game on Sunday, with a noon first pitch.

The Lady Govs went 1-4 in their opening weekend at the University of South Alabama Mardi Gras Invitational – including losses to nationally-ranked Alabama Birmingham and South Alabama.

IUPUI comes into the series with a 2-3 record, having opened their season at the University of Illinois-Chicago Total Control Sports Invitational.

Mel PavelIncluded in the Jaguars three losses were two defeats at the hands of fellow Ohio Valley Conference member Eastern Illinois University.

Offensively, the Lady Govs are led by sophomore catcher Mel Pavel – who hit for a .333 clip (4 for 12) at the Mardi Gras Invitational – including a double and driving in three runs.

Senior pitcher/outfielder Lauren de Castro also hit .333 (3 for 9) last weekend, with a double and three walks.

In the circle, de Castro picked up the Lady Govs lone win in the opening weekend, with freshman Sidney Hooper becoming the first pitcher in school history to pick up a save in her first career appearance.

Sidney HooperFor IUPUI offensively, Alyssa Neff led the Jaguars with a .545 batting average, while Roni Patterson drove in five runs.

In the circle for the Jaguars, Cassie Vodde recorded both wins last weekend for IUPUI – including a complete-game win over Drake.

Austin Peay is 1-2 all-time versus IUPUI and this weekend’s series will be the first meeting between the two programs since the Jaguars picked up a 6-1 victory over the Lady Govs back on February 12th, 2011 at the Belmont/Hampton Inn-Brentwood Spring Classic.
