Clarksville, TN – Senior Daniel Norl scored seven straight points in the third quarter, February 14th in the opening round of the District 10-AAA tournament, to rally top-seeded Kenwood High School past a stubborn Clarksville High squad, 57-44.
Kenwood (22-5), ranked 10th in the state’s Associated Press Poll in Class AAA, led 27-20 at halftime, but saw Clarksville High explode out of intermission by going on a 13-0 run – over the first 2:20 of the second half – to take the lead from the Knights, 33-27.
Norl would lead all scorers with 27 points, while Rivers added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Clarksville High — who came into the tournament as the number-eight seed — hung around early into the fourth quarter with the Knights, getting to within four points, 45-41, following an old-fashioned three-point play by Teal Young with 5:43 left in the game.
But that would be as close as the Wildcats would get the rest of the way, as the Knights held Clarksville High scoreless over the next 4:53, while building its largest lead of the night, 54-41, with 53.9 seconds left.
In the first half, Kenwood jumped out to a 12-6 lead over the first 5:45 of the game, but Clarksville High answered with a 6-0 to tie the game 12-12, with 41 seconds left in the opening quarter.
But Norl would give the Knights the lead after the first eight minutes of play, as he hit the first of his four three-point field goals of the night with just over two seconds left to give Kenwood a 15-12 advantage after one quarter of play.
Norl would score the first five points of the second quarter to push the Knights lead out to eight pints, 20-12, with 6:57 left in the first half, but Clarksville High ran off eight straight points to tie the game for the second time on the night, 20-20, with 3:56 left before intermission.
Kenwood will now advance to the February 15th semifinals, at Rossview High School, where they will face the number-four seed Springfield High School Yellowjackets at 5:30pm, while the other semifinal will pair number-two seeded Henry County High School Patriots and number-three seed West Creek High School Coyotes.
The tournament’s consolation and championship games will be held on February 18th, starting at 6:00pm.
