APSU Lady Govs Softball swept by Samford Bulldogs

APSU Sports Information

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUBirmingham, AL – Austin Peay State University’s softball team was swept in a doubleheader, Wednesday, by former Ohio Valley Conference member Samford University, 11-1 and 6-5.

It was the first meeting between the two programs since March 2008, when the Bulldogs were still an OVC member.

In the opening game, Samford (9-2) jumped out to  2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on a two-run double by Madison Dickey, but Austin Peay cut that lead in half with a run of its own on the top of the third.

Freshman Fatima Larios would get things started with a one-out walk and move to second base on a two-out single by senior Kayla Davidson.

Laurel BurroughsThat would bring up junior Laurel Burroughs, who smashed a double to right field to bring in Larios to make it 2-1.

Sophomore Niya Sparks would have the Lady Govs only other hit in the opener, a double off the wall in left field in the fifth inning.

But that would be as close as the Lady Govs (2-8) would get in the contest, with Samford taking advantage of a hit batter, two walks and an Austin Peay error to score six times in the bottom of the third inning to go up 8-1.

Samford would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth for the 11-1 Game 1 final.

Mel PavelGame 2 would start better for the Lady Govs, as they jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by sophomore Mel Pavel – driving in Burroughs and senior Lauren de Castro – who had reached by a fielder’s choice and a single respectively.

But Samford would tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer Abby Adams.

The score would remain that way until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Samford took advantage of a dropped fly ball in center field by Larios to jump-start an inning where they scored three unearned runs to go up 5-2.

But Austin Peay responded in the top of the fifth to tie the game, making the Bulldogs have to go through three pitchers in the inning.

Junior Christina Beam would open the inning with a single, followed by back-to-back walks to Davidson and Burroughs to load the bases, with no outs.

Fifth-year senior Kristin Whitmire would then be hit by a pitch, to force in Beam, while de Castro followed by drawing a walk to allow Davidson to score.

After a force out at the plate, the Lady Govs would score their final run of the inning to tie the game 5-5 on a walk to Sparks to force in Whitmire.

Samford would score what turned out to be the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning; Adams reached second on a throwing error by Davidson, move to third on a wild pitch and score on a single by Shelby Scott.

Kristin WhitmireAustin Peay did threaten to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning, with Whitmire beating out an infield hit top open the inning and freshman pinch runner Laura Judy moving around to third base, with two outs.

But Bulldogs relief pitcher Mollie Hanson got Sparks on strike to end the threat and the game, with Samford holding on for a 6-5 victory.

Austin Peay will return to action this weekend, as they travel to Chattanooga to play in the Frost Classic.
