Austin Peay (4-7) led wire-to-wire thanks to a five-run first inning. Starting pitcher Alex Robles helped his own cause with a RBI double to score the Govs first run. Torres followed two batters later and his two-run double put APSU up 3-0. Second baseman Logan Gray added a run on a sacrifice fly and the Govs completed a double steal to tack on a fifth run.

Bradley (7-2) scratched out runs in the second and third innings to narrow the deficit. Catcher Drew Carlile brought home the Braves first run on a groundout in the second. Third baseman Spencer Gaa tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly in the third and Bradley trailed 5-2.

P.J. TorresThe Govs recovered both of those runs in their half of the third. Torres led off the inning with a triple to the wall in right center and scored on first baseman Dre Gleason’s sacrifice fly. Shortstop Kevin Corey kept the inning alive with a two-out single and scored on right fielder Rolando Gautier’s single to give APSU a 7-2 lead after three innings.

The Braves made their big push in the fifth inning, plating three runs and threatening for more. Gaa got the Bradley scoring started with an RBI single that followed an APSU error with one out. Robles hit the next batter he faced before getting a fielder’s choice that both brought home a run and supplied a second out. Shortstop Tyler Leffler followed with a RBI single before Robles would end the threat by inducing a fly out, still holding a 7-5 lead.

Rolando GautierAnother Austin Peay error helped Bradley narrow the deficit to one run in the seventh. After right fielder Max Murphy singled with one out, Robles got the inning’s second out on a fly ball. However, the Govs infield kept the inning alive with an error that allowed the run to score, cutting APSU’s lead to 7-6.

The Govs offense snapped out of a long slumber to respond with the game’s final three runs. Austin Peay did not record a hit after Gautier’s RBI single in the third until Torres hit a two-out solo home run to left, pushing the Govs lead back to two runs. One inning later center fielder Chase Hamilton added some insurance with a towering two-run home run to right field, setting the final score.

Robles (1-1) picked up the victory with his season’s longest outing – a seven-inning effort that saw him allowing six runs (three earned) on eight hits while striking out four. Closer Jared Carkuff recorded the game’s final four outs, striking out two, to notch his season’s second save.

Torres led the Govs offense with a 3-for-4, three-RBI performance that saw him finish a single shy of the cycle. Gleason went 2-for-3 with a RBI and six other Govs recorded a base hit.

Bradley’s Stephen Toma (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in five innings. Leffler led the Braves nine-hit offensive outing with a 2-for-5, RBI effort.

Austin Peay closes the Riverview Inn Classic with a 1:00pm, Sunday contest against Xavier.
