Montgomery County, TN – The latest organization to complete requirements for Clarksville-Montgomery County Green Certification is the Clarksville Transit System (CTS).
City of Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan, Montgomery County Mayor Carolyn Bowers, and Chamber of Commerce Director Melinda Shepard were among those who attended to congratulate the Clarksville Transit System for their work.
Transportation Planner, Paul Nelson explained some of the things CTS had done. “We had many things in place already such as recycling our oil and filters and white paper. We also support pollution prevention through our transportation service to Nashville and the purchase of hybrid buses.”
“When we began the CMC Green Certification Program, we added the recycling of cardboard, plastic and toner cartridges and increased our recycling of paper. We also began a lights out campaign and we now power down our computers on nights and weekends in the office areas. We encourage two-sided printing and our new bus wraps prevent us from having to repaint the buses. We even upgraded to low flush toilets with those that had to be replaced.
Mayor Bowers also thanked them for their work and asked about the recapping of tires mentioning that she had recently read about the process. Deputy Transportation Director Arthur Bing responded, “Recapping the tires is a huge cost and materials savings. We do so much driving that we change our tires out almost monthly,” Bing said.
Tire recapping is a re-manufacturing process for tires that replace the tread on worn tires that are inspected and repaired. Recapping or retreading preserves about 90% of the material in spent tires and the material cost is about 20% compared to manufacturing new tires.
Clarksville Transit System is the public transportation provider for the city and provides bus service on nine fixed routes, complementary ADA paratransit service and commuter service to Nashville in the mornings and afternoons.
