Memphis, TN – Austin Peay State University has a lot of ground to make up heading into Tuesday’s final round of the Memphis Intercollegiate, being played at the Colonial Country Club South Course.
“It is a little frustrating right now,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “I know we have the talent to be successful this year. Our preparation in the practice rounds has been good but the bottom line is we are not hitting the shots when we get into tournament play. We need to be more consistent with that, especially off the tee.”
Kayden, in particular, was disappointed in the team’s par 5 scoring. In four par 5s, the Governors played the first round at even par and the second at one-over.”
“The par-5 scoring is not where it needs to be if we are going to be successful this year,” Kayden said. “Par 5s are typically scoring holes, you have a wedge in your hand. We are just converting enough; we are not coming away with enough fours—we are having way too many fives and even sixes. That comes down to wedge play and putting—we are not putting the way we need to as well.”
As it has been all spring, senior Marco Iten continued his strong play, Monday, standing at one-over 145 after rounds of 74-71. He is tied for fifth overall.
Fellow senior Anthony Bradley overcame a horrendous start—being five over after the first nine holes—and scrambled to a 76-74 for a 150.
“Anthony is close,” Kayden said. “He is getting their. If not for a trio of three putts in the second round he would have been right there.”
Freshman Erik Hedberg, playing in his first spring tourney, shot 78-84=162.
Sophomore Korey Smith, playing as an individual, shot 81-75 for a 156.
“We are close,” Kayden said. “Our goal for tomorrow is to try to get into the Top 4 or 5. Sometimes all it takes is one good round and things start to snowball for you in a good direction. We hope that good round will be Tuesday.”
