Clarksville Gas and Water Department - CGWClarksville, TN – Clarksville Gas and Water and Clarksville Fire Rescue personnel will be conducting fire hydrant flushing and testing in Clarksville beginning April 1st, 2014.

Gas and Water fire hydrant flushing is ongoing and takes place at different locations throughout the year. Clarksville Fire and Rescue tests all hydrants annually and anticipates finishing by mid to late May.

Please view the fire hydrant flushing and testing schedule on the Gas and Water website, www.clarksvillegw.com , to learn if flushing or testing is being done in your neighborhood.

Fire hydrant flushing is a routine maintenance process where hydrants are turned on to allow water to flow for several hours in order to remove sediment and iron compounds from water mains. Flushing also circulates the water to help prevent stagnant water problems from developing ensuring the highest quality drinking water to your tap.

During the flushing process you may notice discolored water as the sediments are agitated. This in no way affects the quality or safety of the water. If discoloration occurs, turn on all household faucets and let them run for several minutes to help clear the pipes.

Fire hydrant flushing is also performed on hydrants after flow and pressure tests. This procedure is required to ensure hydrants are adequate and operational for firefighting.

Other important reasons why fire hydrant flushing and testing is necessary and what to expect during the process is also available on the Gas and Water website, www.clarksvillegw.com .
