Austin Peay State University Governors Golf head to Mississippi for Old Waverly Collegiate Championship

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUWest Point, MS – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team will be facing its most challenging field this season when it participates in the 2014 Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, Monday and Tuesday, being held at the Old Waverly Golf Club.

Host Mississippi State returns as the favorite that also will see two other Southeastern Conference schools—Ole Miss and Florida—in the event, to be played on the par-72, 7,088-yard layout.

The 15-team is stacked with 10 Top 100 teams:  Memphis (37), South Alabama (54), Mississippi State (58), Chattanooga (61), Southeastern Louisiana (63), Troy (64), Ole Miss (70), Florida (77), Louisiana (formerly Louisiana Lafayette 74) and the Governors (84). In addition, Wichita State, which beat APSU recently in Florida, is ranked 103. The field appears to be stronger than the one the Govs took down Spring 2013 in Memphis.

Marco Iten“This will be a great test for us as the field will have an NCAA regional feel to it,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “I feel like our team as a whole is very close to playing good golf.

“The guys will be determined to play some solid golf at a great venue this week.”

APSU is coming off a solid performance at the Memphis Intercollegiate, taking sixth place, missing by one shot of finishing in the top five. Senior Marco Iten earned his second straight Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honor by taking second with a 1-over 217.

Anthony BradleyIten again will lead the Govs in Mississippi, He will be joined by fellow seniors Anthony Bradley and Trey Tarpley with junior Tucker Wallace and sophomore Chris Baker rounding out the five. Baker returns the lineup after a week off while Wallace reclaimed his lineup spot after a strong performance at Memphis.

Last season Mississippi State captured the inaugural Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, beating UAB in a sudden-death playoff after finishing at 3-over-par 867.

Designed by U.S. Open winner Jerry Pate and Bob Cupp, the course has been named to Golfweek’s Top 100, Golf Digest’s Top Course in Mississippi, and Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses.

The club has hosted numerous championship course events, including the 1999 U.S. Women’s Open. Old Waverly also has as host to the SEC Men and Women’s Golf championships, Southern Golf Association Women’s and Junior Championships and the 2006 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

The course of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship will play at 7,088 yards. The longest holes fall back to back–holes No. 9 and 10 will be 590 and 543 yards, respectively. Hole No. 3 will be the shortest at 170 yards.

Trey TarpleyPlayers also will be greeted by a 190-yard par 3 at No. 17, that’s almost exclusively over Lake Waverly. To conclude the back nine, one of the most recognizable 18th holes in the South awaits players. The 445-yard par 4 doglegs around Lake Waverly toward the clubhouse.

This is the second of three straight playing weeks for the Governors.

They will return to Mississippi (Madison) for the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate next Monday and Tuesday.
