The Govs have clinched their spot in the field for next week’s Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, but could use a win and a little help to lock up a top-two seed and a first-round bye.

At 6-2 in the conference (11-5 overall), Austin Peay has to beat Murray State and hope that Jacksonville State – who the Govs beat on March 15th – loses to Morehead State, which would drop the Gamecocks to 6-2 in OVC play.

Iago SeffrinThe Govs could also leapfrog Belmont, but the Bruins would need to lose to both SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois, since they own the tiebreaker with Austin Peay. At 3-12 overall (1-6 in OVC play), Murray State is out of the race for the conference championship but could play spoiler to Austin Peay’s bye hopes with a victory.

Led by newly-minted OVC Player of the Week Iago Seffrin, Austin Peay has won its last four outings to rebound from a rough mid-March stretch that saw the Govs lose three of four for the first time in head coach Ross Brown’s tenure. Seffrin has won seven in a row in singles play, while junior Aleksas Tverijonas is in the midst of an amazing 42-3 stretch in his last 45 matches dating back to 2012.

Aleksas TverijonasThe Racers have just two wins since the beginning of March and were shut out in matches against Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky last weekend. Adam Taylor’s five victories at No. 1 singles represents the most singles wins by a Racer this season.

The Govs look to extend a four-match win streak against the Racers; Austin Peay has not lost to Murray State since 2009, and are unbeaten against the Racers in Clarksville since 2006.

Austin Peay gets one final test before the OVC Tournament when the Govs travel to Kentucky to face 35th-ranked Louisville 3:00pm, Sunday.
