Infielder Goes 3-For-4; Fiers Picks Up Win with Quality Start
Nashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds picked up a 5-3 win over the Omaha Storm Chasers Sunday at Greer Stadium, highlighted by Pete Orr’s three-hit, three-RBI day and a dominant start from pitcher Mike Fiers (2-0).
Orr began his stellar 3-for-4 outing with an RBI double into left field in the second inning. The double-bagger scored Sean Halton, 1-for-3, who drove a triple over Omaha’s centerfielder Brett Eibner to lead off the frame.
In the fourth inning, Orr singled to centerfield to help Nashville load the bases for outfielder Jeremy Hermida, who shot a double up the first base line to score two and make it a 3-0 game. The 34-year-old saved his biggest blast for the fifth inning: a two-run homer to the Twice Daily Fan Zone beyond right field. The shot was Orr’s first of the year and gave Nashville the five-run advantage.
Orr’s chance for the cycle came in the seventh, but the veteran hit a grounder to second baseman Jimmy Paredes for the out. Orr is 4-for-10 in the series with a home run, triple, double, and four RBI.
Defensively, Fiers kept the Storm Chasers off the board, scattering five hits across 6 2/3 innings of work to pick up his second win and quality start of the year. He improved his season ERA to 0.71 (1er/12ip), while fanning five Chasers and walking one. The outing gives Fiers a career ERA of 0.41 (1er/22ip) against Omaha.
Omaha started a rally in the eighth inning, leading off with three consecutive singles against Sounds reliever Michael Blazek. With runners on the corners and one out, Blazek surrendered an RBI double to first baseman Matt Fields to end his night. Alfredo Figaro stepped in with a pair of inherited runners and allowed one to score on Paulo Orlando’s single.
Closer Donovan Hand entered in the ninth inning to earn his second save in as many nights.
The Storm Chasers starter P.J. Walters (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing Nashville five runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings.
The Sounds will look to win the four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA-Royals) Monday night at 7:05pm. Nashville sends RHP Johnny Hellweg (1-1, 4.35) to the hill opposite the Chasers RHP Aaron Brooks (0-0, 27.00). Sounds broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5-FM “The GAME”.
