Most recently he represented Finland in the 2013 European Boys Team Championship.

Last summer he captured the stroke-play portion of the 2013 Finnish Boys Match-Play competition after winning the entire event two years earlier.

In the last two years he has finished in the Top 15 in 50 percent of his National Junior Tournaments (U21). He comes to APSU ranked as the fifth best southern Finnish Junior. Vaisanen took 17th at 2013 German Boys Open (U18) and 23rd at the Skandia Junior Open (U21) in Sweden. He finished the 2013 seasons with a 73.9 scoring average.

“Jonas will be a great addition to our young team next year,” APSU coach Kirk Kayden said. “I believe he can come in and make a difference right away. Being a part of his national team both U18 and Now U21 teams was a huge reason why we selected Jonas.”

Kayden appreciates Vaisanen’s competitiveness and athleticism—he played competitive soccer and hockey for several years. His brother Linus, who plays golf at Central Florida, also was a multiple sport athlete growing up.

“I like the fact that he is very athletic and has been a part of a team before,” Kayden said. “Jonas also played high level soccer and hockey while a junior in Finland before turning his full attention to golf.

“Jonas has competed in in the top junior tournaments all over Europe and that exposure will help him be a solid player in the OVC.”

APSU loses four seniors—OVC Golfer of the Year Marco Iten, four-time All-OVC selection Anthony Bradley, Trey Tarpley and Alasdair MacLennan—from the 2013-14 team. Vaisanen is the third freshman signed for 2014-15, joining Luis Navarrete, of Guadalajara, Mexico and Justin Arens, of Westerville, Ohio, as members of the Govs’ 2014-15 recruiting class.
