Austin Peay (21-31, 13-14 OVC) trailed 12-8 entering its half of the ninth inning but pieced together four hits and two walks in the final frame.

Kevin Corey, who entered the game as a relief pitcher, started the rally with a leadoff double off the wall in left field. After an out, shortstop Garrett Copeland walked and center fielder Cayce Bredlau singled to load the bases.

Right field Rolando Gautier pushed home the inning’s first run with a bases loaded walk, ending UTM reliever Stu Jones’ outing. The Skyhawks turned to their John Houston, their closer, to try and end the Govs rally.

Instead, his first pitch to Alex Robles was a wild throw that got to the backstop, allowing all the runners to advance. Robles then fell behind 1-2 but won the battle when he laced a double to the wall in left center to tie the game as Bredlau and Gautier scored.

Houston slowed the Govs momentum when he got first baseman Dre Gleason to line out to center field for the inning’s second out. However, the Govs would not be denied as left fielder Ridge Smith drove a 1-0 offering through the left side of the infield. Robles scored as the throw went wide of home plate, giving APSU the walk off win.

The late rally turned aside a UT Martin (9-38, 5-22 OVC) squad that controlled play for three innings. The Skyhawks scored four runs in the third, six in the fourth and two in the fifth to build a 12-4 advantage through five innings. However, Austin Peay countered with the game’s final nine runs over the final four innings.

The late rally made Robles (6-2) a winner on the mound. The Govs freshman started the game at third base but replaced Corey to record the final out in the top of the ninth. Robles went 1-for-5 at the plate, his lone hit the two-run game-tying double in the ninth.

Corey again was a force on the mound, entering the game to start the sixth inning and tossing 3.2 scoreless innings while allowing two hits. His scoreless stretch allowed the Govs offense to make its late rally.

Smith paced the Govs offense with a 4-for-5, three RBI performance – adding the game-winning RBI single to his two-run double in the first inning. Catcher P.J. Torres kept the Govs in the contest with two home runs as part of a 3-for-5, three RBI effort – with a solo home run in the fourth inning and a two-run shot in the seventh.

Houston (3-2) suffered the loss after allowing one run on two hits to the three batters he faced in the ninth. Starter Alex Martin allowed five runs on 10 hits through 5.1 innings but saw his effort nullified by the Govs rally.

Right fielder Chase Young went 4-for-5 to lead the Skyhawks. First baseman Phil Sorenson was 2-for-5 with four RBI, including a two-run single in the fourth.

Austin Peay closes out its regular-season slate with a four-game road trip that begins with a 6:00pm, Tuesday contest at Lipscomb in Nashville.
