Rossview High soccer wins overtime thriller 2-1 to advance to Region 5-AAA finals

Clarksville, TN – Rossview High School’s soccer team got a goal from Marco Rodriquez in the 14th minute of overtime, May 13th, to cap a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Station Camp High School, in the opening round of the Region 5-AAA tournament.

With the victory, Rossview (14-3-4) has earned the school’s first berth into the TSSAA Sectional tournament since the 2005 season, while also earning the right to host Mt. Juliet High School at 7:00p.m. on May 15th in the Region 5-AAA finals — the first time the Hawks have hosted the region finals in school history.

Mt. Juliet defeated West Creek High School in the other opening-round match in the Region 5-AAA tournament 4-0.

“We’re excited about being able to host the region (finals),” Rossview coach Danny Chartrand said. “We hope to keep this roll going because we haven’t lost on this field this year and we’re hoping to parlay that right into a run to the state (tournament) final eight (teams).

“Obviously if you win the regional you’ll get to host the sectional on Saturday (May 17th) night.”

Rodriquez’s overtime score came off an assist from Jack Lorey, as he got the ball out in front of the Bison (13-4-0) goal and was able to chip in up and over the Station Camp keeper Sam Kell for what turned out to be the game winner.

“I thought this was a pretty even match and we had missed some opportunities that were probably easier than either goal we scored,” Chartrand said. “Both teams defended well, both teams possessed the ball at times, but we found a way to come out on top.”

The goal also came after the Bison were turned away in the eighth minute of overtime from a potential go-ahead goal; with Karson Mayo firing a volley at the Rossview net from about 25 yards out, but keeper Sammy Shelton went up high and caught the back half of the ball to keep the scored knotted at 1-1.

“I think that kind of let the air out of them,” Chartrand said. “It (the shot) was in, there was no doubt, but Sammy (Shelton) hands were strong enough to catch the back half of the ball and not let it get through for the score.

“He’s developing as a goal keeper as the season has gone on and he’s responded to any adversity he’s had this season and a caught after the game and told him it’s better to catch the back of the ball than none of the ball and that’s what he did.”

Shelton finished the match with four saves.

In the first half Station Camp went up 1-0 just five minutes into the match, with the Bison getting a up and over the back line of the Hawks defense with Scott Hall outrunning the Rossview defenders to the ball and was able to punch into the net.

It was the only shot attempted by Station Camp in the first half.

Rossview’s tying goal came in the 48th minute on a rocket off the foot of Justin Beatty, as he took a cross from Keith Scarbo and fired it past Kell to make it 1-1.
