Eric Jinnette, Reagan Greene add names to illustrious list of Hank Miles Jr. winners

GolfClarksville, TN – Some of the best junior golfers in Clarksville have put their names on the Hank Miles Jr. Championship Cup — as the winners of the city’s junior city amateur tournament — and Eric Jinnette and Reagan Greene added their names to that list, June 19th, with one-stroke victories at Swan Lake Golf Course.

Jinnette, who will be a junior at Clarksville High School this fall, shot a final round one-under 70 to overcome a five-stroke deficit to Wildcat teammate Payton Williams (69-76=145) and finish with a two-day total of two-over par 144 (74-70).

“I had no clue of coming back,” said Jinnette, who finished in third place in last year’s tournament. “I knew I was down by five (strokes), so I felt that I had to come out and tie his round of 69 from yesterday to have at least a chance of coming back.

“I just had to keep my focus, mainly and just play the game just like yesterday, but by the time we were on (hole) 16 I was pretty nervous.”

But Jinnette overcame the nerves and when his par putt went in on the final hole he joined a long list of other outstanding junior golfers to hold the Hank Miles Jr. championship title.

“It just feels amazing,” Jinnette said. “I really tried to win it last year and finished third, but now I’ll have my name on the cup with all of the other great golfers who have won before me.”

Tyler Britt (81-74=155) took third.

On the girls side, Greene (75-75=150) – who will be a senior at Rossview High School this fall — held a two-shot lead heading into the final round, but had to hold off a late charge by Austin Peay State University signee Anna Michelle Moore (78-73=151) to edge the Clarksville Academy graduate by a stroke.

“It feels pretty great,” Greene said. “I started playing in this (tournament) when I was six and I had to beg Dr. (Keith) Peterson to let me play. Ever since then I just knew I wanted to win that trophy. It was one of those things that I always looked up to those girls who won it.”

Along with having to hold off Moore – who finished as tournament runner-up for the second straight year – Greene had to overcome a question of confidence on the final nine holes after reaching the turn at three-over on her round.

“I got a little down on myself when I made the turn because I was three over (par),” she said.” “Then I pared 10 and 12 and birdied 11 and that’s when my confidence kind of kicked in. I had no idea where I was in the standings and I knew I needed to keep grinding it out.”

Mariah Smith (77-77=154) finished in third place.

In the other Hank Miles Jr. boys divisions, Samuel Nicholson (38-40=78) won the nine-hole flight, with Sean Gardner (43-44=87) coming in as runner-up and Morgan Wiggins (48-44=92) third.

In the boys six-hole flight, Briley Hagewood (35-31=66) came in first, with Aaron Tucker (36-35=71) second and Hayden Boyd (34-38=72) winning a scorecard playoff with John Riley Wallace (37-35=72) for third place.

In the boys three-hole flight, Luke Fuqua (17-15=32) took top honors, while Austin Gottschalk (19-22=41) was runner-up and Cord Cunningham (19-23=42) took third place.

In the girls nine-hole flight, Kallie Robertson (49-48=97) and Alexis Williams (48-49=97) finished atop the flight, but Robertson won the scorecard playoff to take first place.

McKinley Cunningham finished third in the nine-hole flight (51-49=100).

In the girls six-hole flight, Madeline Skau (32-36=68) led wire-to-wire to finish first, with Ellie Wiggins (35-35=70) taking second place and Campbell Moore (38-39=77) third.

In the girls three-hole flight, Heather Figueroa (21-21=42) took first with Emma Markus (23-23=46) coming in second and Izzy Heggie (24-29=53) third.
