Nashville Sounds lose 5-1 to Salt Lake City Bees Tuesday afternoon

Nashville SoundsSalt Lake City, UT- The Nashville Sounds (40-40) could not overcome a poor start in a 5-1 loss to the Salt Lake City Bees (32-48) on Tuesday afternoon at Smith’s Ballpark. The defeat dropped Nashville to an 8-16 mark in its last 24 road games.

The Bees tagged Sounds starter Johnnie Lowe (0-3) for four runs in the top of the 1st, providing all the offense they would need to pick up a win. Lowe lasted just 2/3 of an inning, taking the loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks.

Salt Lake took a 2-0 lead after just two batters when J.B. Shuck hit a home run following a lead-off single from Matt Long. The Bees added two more runs in the opening frame on an Ian Stewart sacrifice fly and a Roberto Lopez RBI single.

Kyle Heckathorn took over for Lowe and gained control before things got out of hand, providing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Heckathorn combined with relievers Alfredo Figaro, Donovan Hand, Arcenio Leon and Brent Leach to allow just one run in 7 1/3 innings of bullpen work.

Nashville’s offense had batters reach safely in six of nine innings, but failed to put together a big rally needed to get back in the game.

Outfielder Caleb Gindl, however, continued his hot streak, going 3-for-4 including an RBI triple in the top of the 6th that cut the deficit to 4-1. In his last 12 games, Gindl has posted a .364 batting average (16-for-44) with six multi-hit games.

Sounds second baseman Pete Orr has hits in 14 of his last 16 games after hitting a double in the 2nd inning, posting a batting average of .373 (19-for-51) during that span.

The Bees answered in the bottom half of the 6th when Matt Long hit an RBI single off of Hand. Salt Lake City then put the game away by retiring the Sounds in order in two of the last three innings.

The Sounds return home and will begin an eight-game homestand on Thursday against the first-place New Orleans Zephyrs at 7:05pm. Sounds RHP Ariel Pena (4-5, 4.04 ERA) will face off against Zephyrs RHP Alex Sanabia (2-2, 5.23 ERA). Jeff Hem will have the call on 102.5 The Game.
