Clarksville Police Department places 3rd in National Law Enforcement Challenge

Clarksville Police Department - CPDClarksville, TN – Sarah Horn, Senior Program Manager for I.A.C.P., announced that the Clarksville Police Department Placed 3rd among peers in National Law Enforcement Challenge.

The National Law Enforcement Challenge (NLEC) is a national traffic safety awards program that recognizes excellent law enforcement traffic safety programs.

The program provides law enforcement agencies with an opportunity to make a difference in their local communities and allows agencies to learn from one another and establish future goals in traffic safety enforcement and education.

The NLEC has specific categories and criteria, which quantify and qualify the activities agencies completed during a calendar year. The NLEC focuses on occupant protection, impaired driving, speed, and local community issues.

Each section asks specific open-ended questions requiring participating agencies to share what they are doing in their jurisdictions in the key focus areas.

The criteria agencies are judged on include Problem Identification, Policy, Planning, Training, Public Information and Education, Enforcement, and Outcomes. Problem Identification can include crash analysis, speed surveys, seatbelt surveys and community input. Planning requires an agency to provide a description of the problem, measuring objectives, monitoring activities and overall evaluations. Lastly, Outcomes focus on how the changes made in each agency’s community affected overall safety.

A panel of evaluators reviewed each application and assigned points based on the established criteria. After all of the applications were scored, the agencies were ranked in their appropriate categories based on agency size and type. All of the national evaluators are independent members of the law enforcement community, public safety, and corporate partners who have demonstrated advanced knowledge of highway safety initiatives.

The NLEC Subcommittee recognizes that there are many excellent traffic safety programs and earning enough points to qualify for an award is an accomplishment worthy of recognition.

The Clarksville Police Department was announced as a category winner among Municipal Agencies with 251 or more sworn Officers. The Clarksville Police Department placed 3rd among submitting agencies in their category. Representatives from the department will be attending the International Association of Chiefs of Police Conference in October 2014 and will be accepting the award on behalf of the Clarksville Police Department.

Chief Al Ansley and Lt. Phil Ashby commend the members of the Department for their hard work and dedication in the area of Traffic Safety. Traffic Investigator Melissa Spielhagen is to be commended for her work and efforts in gathering and compiling all the information and completing the National Law Enforcement Challenge Book.
