Austin Peay State University Women’s Soccer falls to Kentucky Wildcats 5-0 in exhibition match

The Lady Govs were outshot 33-0 by the Wildcats and mustered just one corner kick, from freshman Sophia Fabbro in the 83rd minute.

“It was tough to give up two early goals at the start of each half,” said head coach Kelley Guth. “We need to be better prepared and come out more focused at the start.”

Kentucky scored twice in the first five minutes to set an early tone, with Courtney Raetzman and Cara Ledman both finishing at the far post to stake the Wildcats to an early lead. However, the Lady Govs would settle down and limit Kentucky for the half’s remainder, with sophomore Katie Emig making four first-half saves after getting the start in net.

The Wildcats would score twice in the first five minutes of the second half as well, with Hermann Trophy Watch List honoree Arin Gilliland taking a give-and-go from Alex Carter for the finish and Raetzman adding another just over a minute later. Jade Klump would tack on the Wildcats fifth goal in the 58th minute to conclude the scoring.

“They were a very seasoned team with a lot of experience,” Guth said. “We had moments were we defended well, and we can go from here and focus on what we need to do to get ready for the season. We got out of preseason fairly healthy and gave some of our younger players great experience.”

Freshman Lindsey Todd made three saves and allowed two goals in her 34 minutes of action after subbing on for Emig. Junior Nikki Filippone made one save and allowed one goal as the final Austin Peay netminder to appear in the Wednesday morning match.

The loss concludes the exhibition slate for Austin Peay. The Lady Govs kick off the regular season 7:00pm., August 22nd at Evansville.
