Montgomery Central Indians get last minute touchdown to beat Clarksville Academy Cougars 14-13 in Battle of the Cumberland

Clarksville, TN – Montgomery Central High School scored a touchdown on a long pass play in the final 76 seconds, Thursday night, August 21st at Phillip Horsey Stadium, to post a come-from-behind 14-13 victory over Clarksville Academy, in their annual Battle of the Cumberland matchup.

Dequimothy Northington caught the game-tying 33-yard pass from Indians quarterback Peyton Delvendahl, with 1:16 left in the game, followed by the go-ahead extra-point by Austin Neely to give Montgomery Central (1-0) its’ first lead since taking a 7-0 to open the game.

Clarksville Academy (0-1) had one final chance to get back into at least field-goal range for the win, but a great kickoff return well into Montgomery Central territory was brought back to the Cougars 27-yard line on a block in the back penalty, with 1:06 left.

The Cougars were able to get one first down, but two dropped passes and a sack by the Indians defense as time ran out sealed away the one-point victory.

Montgomery Central opened the night’s scoring on its first drive of the game, as they went seven 70 yards on seven plays — keyed by a 32-yard run by TJ Sauers –followed by Delvendahl going in from one-yard out to put the Indians up 7-0, after Neely’s extra-point just 3:29 into the contest.

Delvendahl led the Indians with 73 yards rushing on 20 carries, while Sauers had 69 yards on six carries.

Overall Montgomery Central outrushed Clarksville Academy 237 (on 43 attempts) to 100 yards (on 29 carries).

The Cougars would answer right back on their first drive of the night to tie the game 7-7, highlighted by a 43-yard pass play from Jaleel Stubbs to Cody Parsons to pen the drive.

Stubbs would score the touchdown, going in from five-yard out, with Justin Hood kicking the extra-point.

The score would remain tied at 7-7 as they went into the second half, but Clarksville Academy would take advantage of a fumble by Montgomery Central’s Brady Maynard — at the Indians’ 40-yard line – that was recovered by Parsons to set up their go-ahead score.

After the recovery, the Cougars would need only three plays to find the end zone with Konar Chapman breaking a couple of Montgomery Central defender’s tackles to go 33 yards to make it 13-7 – after the extra-point try by Clarksville Academy was no good.

Both teams will return to action on August 29th, as Montgomery Central will be on the road, traveling to Harpeth High School for a 7:00pm contest, while Clarksville Academy hosts White House-Heritage High School at 7:00pm.
