Chattanooga, TN – The Austin Peay State University women’s cross country team hit the road to compete in Friday’s Powerade Invitational, hosted by Chattanooga at Moccasin Bend. The meet, which was held in the unique “double dual” format, saw the Governors go 3-4 on the afternoon.
The Govs were able to defeat Jacksonville State (25-31), Tennessee State (18-40) and UT Martin (22-33) but fell to Alabama State (20-37), Georgia State (15-46), Tennessee (22-33) and hosts Chattanooga (15-45).
The Lady Govs were led in the two-mile race by sophomore Molly Jordan (12:11.76), senior Jessica Gray (12:11.99) and freshman Becca Wheeler (12:39.09). Rounding out the scoring five for the Govs were sophomore Unjala Lester (12:45.19) and freshman Sarah-Emily Woodward (12:53.24). Freshmen Natalie Olberding (13:39.45) and Michael McGhee (14:51.31) also saw action for the Lady Govs.
The Lady Govs were able to go 3-0 against Ohio Valley Conference competition, and that fact was not lost on head coach Doug Molnar.
“Going 3-0 against conference foes is absolutely huge,” Molnar said. “We were definitely a lot more competitive in this meet and I was pleased with results today.”
Austin Peay will not be competing next weekend as they prepare to host the APSU Invitational. The race will be held at 5:00pm September 19th, at the Family Life Center Cross Country Course.
