Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUBurlington, IA – Junior Austin Kramer sits in a fourth-place tie after Day 1 of the Golfweek Conference Challenge while he and his Austin Peay State University teammates sit in ninth place overall after Sunday’s opening round, being played at Spirit Hollow Golf Course.

The Knoxville Tennessee junior, Kramer had five birdies and three bogeys on the par-72, 7,222-yard layout as the Govs shot an 11-over 299.

“Kramer played well,” interim Govs coach Dustin Korte said. “Two-under is a very good score on this course. Chris (Baker) shot par and believe that is a good score—this course plays really tough.”

Baker, in fact, is tied for 12th. But the APSU freshmen, playing in their first college tournament, well, played like freshmen for the most part.

Luis Navarrete, of Guadalajara, Mexico, came about with a 4-over 76 while both Justin Arens, of Columbus, Ohio, and Jonas Vaisanen, a Karby Finland native, struggled more so, shooting 81 and 82, respectively.

“I know they (freshmen) are feeling some discouragement right now,” Korte said. “But this is a real hard golf course. There is no margin for error—there are not too many places you can hit the ball on this golf course.

“But it was nothing to be ashamed of. They just got to learn from today and be better tomorrow and I know they will be.”

Navarrete, in fact, played the first nine holes (APSU started at No. 10) of his college career at even par but when he made the turn he struggled with No. 1, shooting a four-over eight, but then settled back down to play par golf the round’s remainder.

Vaisanen also was forced to deal with big numbers. He had three doubles and one triple bogey that elevated his score.

LSU leads the event with a 10-under 278, followed by host Iowa, eight shots back.

“This fall is being used to determine who will be in the lineup in the spring,” Korte said. “These freshmen are going to succeed, whether it is in the spring, next month or tomorrow, and it is my job to help them get better.”

The second round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Monday, with the final slated for Tuesday.
