Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – A two-set deficit proved too much to overcome for Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team as it dropped a four-set (21-25, 25-27, 25-12, 25-22) nonconference decision to Chattanooga, Tuesday, in its home opener at the Dunn Center.

Errors in the opening two sets proved costly to Austin Peay (3-9) in nip-and-tuck races. The Lady Govs committed nine attack errors in the first set, three coming in a pivotal 5-0 Chattanooga run. That burst turned a 9-9 tie into a 14-10 UTC lead it would not relinquish.

APSU committed seven attack errors in the second set, again three occurring during a 4-1 Mocs run that tied the set at 18-18. That bit of momentum was enough as a later 4-0 UTC run turned the tide for good in a 27-25 victory.

APSU's Samantha StrotherAustin Peay came out of the break and overwhelmed Chattanooga in the third set. First the Lady Govs posted an impressive six service aces in the frame.

Then the offense committed just two attack errors on 13 kills to post an efficient .407 attack percentage. That combination saw APSU race out to a 7-1 lead and extend it to 17-7 before cruising to the match-extending 25-12 victory.

Chattanooga (5-7) and Austin Peay returned to the closely fought format in the fourth set, which featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. The Lady Govs scored five straight points to build a 19-14 lead – the largest by either team in the set. Chattanooga battled back with a pair of 3-0 runs to take a 22-21 lead later in the frame.

APSU's Sammie EbrightUltimately, Austin Peay’s error-prone ways returned as three straight attack errors ended the match, with Chattanooga prevailing 25-22.

“We have battled ourselves for three weeks,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “Just when I believe we have learned to avoid those errors they pop back up. If we are to make a big step forward we have to do a better job putting the ball down between the lines.”

Junior Samantha Strother led Austin Peay off the bench with career-high 16 kills and a .433 attack percentage. Freshman Ashley Slay also came off the bench to add a career-best 11 kills and a .562 attack percentage. Sophomore Sammie Ebright (12 kills) and senior Jada Stotts (11 kills) also reached double-digit kill territory.

APSU's Ashley SlayAustin Peay out-hit Chattanooga with a 66-51 edge in kills. However, Chattanooga was more efficient on the night, finishing with a .267 attack percentage against APSU’s .239 mark.

Kristy Wieser led Chattanooga with 13 kills and a .355 attack percentage.

Austin Peay closes out the nonconference portion of its schedule at the Dish Lady Vols Classic. The Lady Govs open that tournament with a 6:00pm, Thursday contest against host Tennessee.
