APSU Lady Govs Softball win twice against Volunteer State Lady Pioneers

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUGallatin, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team completed the road part of its fall schedule with a 3-1 record after sweeping Volunteer State Community College, Friday evening, by scores of 7-4 and 14-4.

The Lady Govs never trailed the Lady Pioneers in the doubleheader, scoring in five of seven innings in Game 1, while putting together two innings of five or more runs in Game 2.

In the opener, Austin Peay would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Alexis Hill – who reached via a walk — scored from second base on a throwing error by the Vol State third baseman on a ground ball by Erica Inagaki.

The score would remain that way until the top of the fourth, when Austin Peay plated three more runs to go up 4-0.

Laurel Burroughs opened the inning with a single and scored all the way around from first base on a double to left-center field by Savanna Oliver.

Oliver would move to third base on a passed ball and score when Mel Pavel‘s sacrifice fly to deep right-center field was dropped by the center fielder, which allowed Pavel to move all the way around to third.

Pavel, who led the Lady Govs with two hits, would score the final run of the inning on an infield out by Courtney Brower.

Vol State would finally get on the board with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Austin Peay answered right back with a run in the top of the fifth on an RBI single by Burroughs driving in Natalie Ayala.

The Lady Pioneers would get as close as 5-3 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but wouldn’t get any closer the rest of the way with Austin Peay scoring single runs in both the sixth and seventh innings on a solo home run by Hill in the sixth and a RBI single by Lake in the seventh.

Vol State’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth.

Ayala would get the win going the first four innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits, while Morgan Boggess picked up the save by going the final three innings – giving up three unearned runs on three hits, while striking out two.

In Game 2, Austin Peay broke the game open with a nine-run second inning – highlighted by bases-clearing triple by Burroughs along with a two-run double from Ashley Eisenbraun.

Lake and Morgan Hoeg also recorded RBIs in the inning.

Vol State would score two runs of its own in the bottom of the second, but Austin Peay would follow its nine-run second inning with a five-run effort in the third – with Burroughs adding three more RBIs on a double and Lake picking up her second RBI of the game with a bases-loaded walk.

Lake, Burroughs and Hoeg all collected two hits each in the second game.

Sidney Hooper got the start in the circle and went two innings, with Allie Blackwood coming in for the final three innings.

Austin Peay will return to action this Tuesday, with its first home games of the fall, as they host Cumberland University at Cheryl Holt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00pm.
