Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team will meet Tennessee in a fall intersquad scrimmage, Saturday, November 1st, to highlight the fall practice schedule.
The November 1st matchup with Tennessee, the first fall intersquad scrimmage during head coach Gary McClure’s tenure, will provide a much-needed test against outside competition for the Govs. The contest will be a nine-inning affair followed by several innings where the coaches will set up specific situations to test their teams.
“The scrimmage against Tennessee will be a great opportunity to test ourselves in the fall,” said Govs head coach Gary McClure. “While we return a large part of last year’s team, we will be adding quite a few new bodies and need to give everyone a look.”
Austin Peay returns seven hitters that recorded a start last season, including six that recorded 47 or more starts last season. In addition, the Govs return the bulk of their pitching staff with 13 pitchers that accounted for 363.1 of the team’s 493.2 innings (73.6 percent) and 43 of the 56 starts.
However, the Govs coaching staff did not stand pat and added 15 newcomers to the roster, which will stand at its maximum 35-man limit.
In addition, the Red-Black World Series – the annual Govs intrasquad event – will be held in mid-November. More details, including a schedule of intrasquad scrimmages, will be released at a later date.
