Clarksville, TN – After being held in check for most of the opening half, Rossview High School’s football team scored the final three touchdowns of the game, Friday night, October 3rd in their District 10-AAA matchup, versus Kenwood High School to rally for a 26-18 victory.
The Hawks (4-3, 3-1 District 10-AAA) were trailing 18-7, with just 29.3 seconds left in the first half, when they started their rally with a drive starting at the Rossview 43-yard line.
Isaiah Johnson, who finished the night with a game-high 213 yards rushing on 32 carries, snapped off runs of 11-, 12- and five-yards to get down to the Knights 29-yard line, with just under 10 seconds left in the half.
Tristin Luke — who is normally a running back, but took some direct snaps as a quarterback – took the final snap of the half and ran it the 29 yards for a touchdown, as the horn sounded, to cut the Knights lead to 18-14 at intermission. As the second half started, both teams would move the ball on sustained drives, but neither could find the end zone until the final Rossview drive of the third quarter.
That drive was set up by the Hawks defense, who held the Knights to a three-and-out after they had turning the ball over to Kenwood on downs at the Knights 10.
The Malcom Perry punt – from the eight-yard line – went only 32 yards and gave the Hawks great field possession at the Knights 40.
Rossview would only need two plays to take their first lead since late in the first quarter, with Johnson going in from 25 yards out on the final play of the third quarter to give the Hawks a 20-18 lead – after a bad snap and hold on the extra-point didn’t allow a kick attempt.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Kenwood special teams made a huge mistake giving the ball right back to Rossview.
Rossview would take advantage of the extra possession by going the 35 yards on seven plays with Johnson scoring his third touchdown of the night – this time from four yards out for a 26-18 lead after the two-point conversion failed.
That missed conversion gave Kenwood some life, as it kept it a one-possession game with Rossview only holding an eight-point advantage.
On their next possession Kenwood drove the ball down to the Rossview 15-yard line, but had to turn the ball over on downs, with 5:33 left in the game.
The Knights defense would get the ball back for their offense, forcing the Hawks to punt with just under three minutes left and give them the ball on their own 27-yard line.
But an interception by the Hawks Dillon Johnson – with 2:09 left – sealed the game away, as the Hawks ran out the clock for the 26-18 victory.
In the first half after the two teams failed to score on their opening drives of the game, Kenwood would take the early 6-0 lead with AJ Richardson scored a six-yard touchdown run with 4:45 left in the first quarter.
Richardson would finish with 110 yards rushing on 22 carries.
Rossview would answer right back with a touchdown, as Johnson capped a seven-play, 66-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run – with the extra point by Riley Benson giving the Hawks a 7-6 lead with 2:15 left in the opening quarter.
Two possessions later, Kenwood retook the lead 12-7, on an eight-yard touchdown run by Perry, with 6:27 left in the opening half.
After the Knights forcing Rossview to punt on its next drive, Kenwood extended its lead out to 18-7 with a 55-yard drive on nine plays, with Jayvion Walker going in from 27 yards out on a juggling catch and run of a pass from Perry.
The two teams return to District 10-AAA action October 10th, with Rossview hosting West Creek High School and Kenwood hosting Springfield High School. Both game are scheduled to kickoff at 7:00pm.
