Austin Peay Sports Information
Clarksville, TN – Five players reached double-digit scoring territory as Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team cruised to a 92-45 exhibition win against NAIA St. Catharine, Saturday night at the Dunn Center.
Austin Peay, which returned all five of its leading scorers, broke out to a 10 point lead by the 11:52 mark of the first half. The Lady Govs stretched the lead to 20 points in the next five-minute span as four different players scored. Austin Peay would take a 26-point, 42-16 lead into halftime.
Sophomore forward Beth Rates led Austin Peay with 10 points in the first half while junior guard Tiasha Gray had eight points, five assists and two steals.
“I felt we played well offensively in the first half,” said Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels. “However I don’t believe we played with the same intensity on the defensive end. We allowed too many open shots and the score could have been a lot closer than it was.”
The Lady Govs opened the second half by quickly extending its lead to 34 points with a 6-2 run that included a Gray three pointer and a baskets by Rates and senior guard Kristen Stainback.
Austin Peay’s lead hit 42 points, 74-32, after back-to-back baskets by freshman Sydney Gooch on both sides of the seven-minute mark. Freshman Savannah Foister‘s jumper with 43 seconds left gave Austin Peay it largest lead while setting the game’s final score.
“The second half was much better on both ends of the court,” said Daniels. “I was pleased with our intensity all the way through. Our bench players came out and there wasn’t a drop off in the level of play and that was encouraging. Overall, there were some things we can build on as we prepare for our next contest.”
Rates led Austin Peay with 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, but left midway through the second half after suffering an injury. Freshman center Tearra Banks, who at 6-3 stood 4 inches taller than the tallest St. Catharine player, recorded an 11-point, 11-rebound double double.
Austin Peay made 52 percent (39-of-75) of its shots and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) of its free throws. The Lady Govs held a commanding 52-35 rebounding advantage and finished with 10 steals.
Heather Sandlin led St. Catharine with 16 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Patriots did not have another player reach double-digit scoring, though they did have nine other players score.
Austin Peay will get eight days to prepare for its next exhibition outing, a 2:00pm, Sunday, November 9th contest against NAIA Martin Methodist.
