Clarksville, TN – Kenwood High School’s Lady Knights basketball team couldn’t overcome 24 second-half free throws by Community High School, November 11th, as they dropped their TSSAA Hall of Fame Game to the Viqueens 75-56 to open their regular season.
Leading 30-25 a minute into the second half, Kenwood would see the Viqueens score seven straight points – including five coming at the free throw line – to take their first lead of the game, 32-30 with 5:41 left in the third quarter.
The Lady Knights would answer back with a 7-0 run of their own, beginning with two field goals from Jasmine Johnson and a bucket from Sharisa Kimble, to regain the lead 37-32, with 4:05 left in the period.
Kenwood would maintain a lead until the final 2:21, as the Viqueens closed out the third quarter by outscoring the Lady Knights 11-2 – including the final seven points coming from the charity stripe – as Community led 47-40 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Unfortunately for the Lady Knights the momentum gained by the Viqueens in the third quarter continued to build in the final period, as Community opened the quarter by scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the period to build its lead out to 15 points, 57-42, with 5:52 left in the contest.
That would prove to be the knock-out punch, as the Lady Knights wouldn’t get any closer than 12 points the rest of the way, with Community leading by as many as 22 points in the final stanza, before settling for a 19-point victory, 75-56.
In the first half, both teams came out and struggled to put points on the board – with the two teams tied 3-3 after the first three-and-a-half minutes of play.
But a three by Analiese Osborne would start a 7-0 run by Kenwood, as they build a 10-3 lead with 3:02 left in the opening quarter.
The Viqueens defense would hold Kenwood off the scoreboard the rest of the quarter, as they closed out the period by scoring the final six points to cut the Kenwood lead to 10-9 after one quarter of play.
The second quarter would see the Lady Knights extend its lead out to six points, 18-12, just a couple of minutes into the quarter, but Community answered with a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 19-18, with 3:50 in the first half.
It would be back-and-fourth the rest of the opening half, with the two teams trading the lead five times over the final three minutes, before Kenwood took a one-point lead into the locker room at intermission, 26-25, on a bucket by Malia Umrani with three seconds left.
