Evansville, IN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team overcame a frigid start, but a couple of key turnovers late proved costly in a 72-68 loss to Evansville, Sunday afternoon at the Ford Center.
Austin Peay (0-2) struggled to find any offensive rhythm in the opening nine minutes, making just two of its first 20 shots.Meanwhile, Evansville connected on six of its first 16 shots and led by 10 points, 15-5, with 11 minutes remaining.
The lead remained near 10 points and grew briefly to 13 points during the next nine minutes.
The Lady Govs offense hit its stride in the half’s final 1:37, piecing together a 10-2 run.
Freshman Madison Rich hit two three-pointers – one to start the burst and another that cut the deficit to four points – and sophomore Jacey Scott‘s running layup trimmed that to two points, 30-28, where it stood at halftime.
“I didn’t feel we were patient enough in the first half,” said Lady Govs head coach Carrie Daniels. “We would make one or two passes before taking a shot. We also were taking a mid-range jumper in the high post and that’s what Evansville wanted us to do. I told the team we needed to come out in the second half and play our game.”
The second half started with senior Kristen Stainback hitting a jumper to tie the game just 29 seconds into the period. While Austin Peay could not take the lead it was able to respond to Evansville enough to force six ties over the next seven minutes.
Evansville (1-0) was able to extend its lead back to nine points, 54-45 with 8:36 left, courtesy a 10-2 run spurred by a pair of Sara Dickey layups. The lead lasted just two minutes as Austin Peay scored the next nine points, including conventional three point plays by both Banks and Rich, to tie the game 54-54.
The Purple Aces were able to stall the Lady Govs charge and built another five point lead at the five-minute mark.
That was the first of six lead changes over the next two minutes. Evansville took the lead for good on Dickey’s layup with 1:33 left. On the ensuing APSU possession, Tearra Banks was called for a charge, which allowed Evansville to add to its lead with a pair of Mallory Ladd free throws.
Banks would score on the next possession, but APSU’s final two possessions resulted in a turnover and a missed three-pointer, sealing its fate.
“We did a lot of good things in the second half,” said Daniels. “We came out and executed our offense and got good looks at the basket because of it. Unfortunately, things didn’t break our way in the final minutes, but we were right there.”
Rich led Austin Peay with 21 points, converting on 7-of-9 shots including 4-of-6 from three-point range. She also was 3-of-3 at the free throw line and had three assists and two rebounds.
“I was proud of the way Madison played,” said Daniels. “She has the ability to hit the three and drive and get to the basket and she showed both of those skills today. She did a good job for us and provided some key baskets.”
Banks was dominant in her return to action, posting a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double that included five blocked shots and four steals. Stainback recovered from her cold start to finish with 10 points. Junior Tiasha Gray scored just seven points but handed out 10 assists while committing no turnovers.
“Tearra really helped us under the glass,” said Daniels. “She’s someone teams have to account for and she did a great job standing her ground defensively. Tiasha was a good floor leader today. You have to be doing something right when you go 40 minutes without a turnover.”
Dickey led Evansville with 20 points. Ladd added a 12-point, 14-rebound performance that was helped by a 7-of-8 effort at the free-throw line.
Austin Peay returns home and will host Grand Canyon in an 11:00am, Saturday contest at the Dunn Center.
