Clarksville Parks and Recreation Report for November 16th, 2014

Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

This weeks highlights include: Christmas on the Cumberland Grand Opening, Giving on the Cumberland Returns to Christmas on the Cumberland, Register now for December Swim Lessons, Christmas in Occupied Clarksville and Clarksville Park and Facility Rentals.

Christmas on the Cumberland Grand Opening Scheduled

Join the City of Clarksville and US Bank as we celebrate Christmas on the Cumberland’s 16th year with a grand opening ceremony, Tuesday, November 25th, 2014 at 6:30pm at the McGregor Park RiverWalk and Museum. The grand opening will feature the official lighting of the Cumberland by Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan along with special guests, Channel 4 News Snowbird and Santa Claus!

Christmas on the Cumberland will be open nightly from 5:00pm to 10:00pm, Sunday through Thursday and 5:00pm to 11:00pm, Fridays and Saturdays through January 3rd, 2015. Admission to the event is free.

Family friendly activities will take place from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, November 28th-29th, December 12th-13th and 19th-20th. This year’s activities include caroling, making reindeer food, letters to Santa, Christmas card creations, gingerbread house building, elf school relays, and ornament making.

Giving on the Cumberland Returns to Christmas on the Cumberland

Giving on the Cumberland will continue this year and encourages visitors to help local nonprofits in need. From November 25th-December 20th, “request ornaments” with items of need from local nonprofit organizations will be placed on Christmas trees in the McGregor Museum.

Visitors to Christmas on the Cumberland will have the opportunity to take a “request ornament” and bring their donation to the Clarksville Parks and Recreation main office (102 Public Square) at any time, or to the museum December 19th-20th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, where you’ll also be given a chance to meet the participating nonprofits.

Register now for December Swim Lessons

Every month, the Indoor Aquatic Center offers five comprehensive levels of swimming lessons as well as Mommy & Me, Preschool, Adult and Adaptive lessons to the public! The next two-week session will be held December 1st-11th. Cost is $35.00 per session, or $15.00 with a pool pass.

Registration is currently underway at recpro.cityofclarksville.com. If those dates don’t work with your schedule, sign up for one of our upcoming sessions: January 5th-15th, February 2nd-12th, March 2nd-12th or April 6th-16th.

Christmas in Occupied Clarksville

Make plans to visit Fort Defiance Interpretive Center on Sunday, December 14th from 3:00pm to 6:00pm to experience the holidays as soldiers and civilians did in the 1860’s.

Visitors to the event will be able to step back in time and see period decorations, visit with a nineteenth century Santa, and enjoy eggnog, cakes and caroling. The event is free and open to the public.

Clarksville Park and Facility Rentals

Whether you are planning parties, picnics, reunions, weddings or any other occasion, keep in mind a Clarksville Parks and Recreation facility for your next event. For availability and fee information for park facilities, call 931.645.7476.
