APSU Lady Govs Volleyball loses in four sets to Belmont at OVC Tournament

Austin Peay Sports Information

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUMurray, KY – Seventh-seeded Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team put No. 2 seed Belmont on the ropes early, but could not deliver the knockout blow and ultimately fell in four sets (23-25, 25-27, 25-22, 22-25) in first round action at the Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Championship, Thursday, at Racer Arena.

Austin Peay (14-18) had Belmont where it wanted in both the first sets. The Lady Govs led 20-11 in the opening set but saw Belmont close the frame with a 14-3 run to win 25-23.

Austin Peay controlled the run of play early in the second set and led 18-14, only to see that lead evaporate.

Belmont would tie the set 21-21, the first of five ties down the stretch, but Belmont would win the set courtesy a pair of APSU errors, 27-25.

APSU's Jada StottsAfter the break, neither team could final much momentum. The third set swung Austin Peay’s direction thanks to a late 4-0 run, which included kills by senior Jada Stotts, junior Aubrey Marsellis and freshman Ashley Slay, giving it a 24-20 lead. Belmont fended off a pair of set points before another Stotts kill ended the set, 25-22.

The fourth set was another see-saw battle early with 10 ties and seven lead changes. Belmont would gain control with a late 3-0 run that was helped by a pair of Austin Peay miscues. The Lady Govs battled back within two points, 24-22, but another Austin Peay error ended the match, 25-22.

APSU's Christina White“We battled all day,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “I was proud of the way our freshmen stepped up on a big stage and played well. I’m disappointed for our seniors; it’s always difficult to have your senior season come to an end.”

Freshman Christina White and Slay each started the match, White posting a team-best 12 kills while Slay added 10 kills. Hillary Plybon added 12 kills while Stotts finished with 11 kills.

Arianna Person led Belmont with a match-high 18 kills. Scarlet Gable posted 17 kills.
