Montgomery Central Indians’ defense holds Greenbrier’s offense in check in 53-38 victory

Montgomery Central High SchoolServall Termite & Pest ControlClarksville, TN – Montgomery Central High School’s boys basketball team flexed its defensive muscles, Monday, December 1st at the Thomas-Young Gymnasium, as it held Greenbrier High School to single figures in three out of four quarters to post a 53-38 victory.

The two teams would play to a 12-12 tie after the first eight minutes of play, but Montgomery Central (4-1) would start to take control of the game midway through the second quarter.

Leading 18-17, with 3:41 left before intermission, the Indians would run off nine straight points while holding the Bobcats scoreless over a span of 2:20 to build a double-figure lead 27-17.

Lamont Smith and Dalton Perkins would spearhead the run by the Indians, with the two combining for seven of the nine points during the run.

Smith would lead all scorers with 22 points, with Perkins chipped in with 15 points. No Greenbrier players scored more than nine points in the contest.

Greenbrier (1-5) wouldn’t get any closer than seven points the rest of the way in the opening half, with Montgomery Central taking a nine-point advantage into halftime, 29-20.

The third quarter would see the two team’s trade buckets for the first 3:15 of the period, before Greenbrier scored four straight points to get to within seven points, 35-28, with 3:54 left in the quarter.

But the Indians would get an old-fashioned three-point play from Smith, followed by Malik Dickson hitting three of four free throw attempts to extent the Montgomery Central lead out to the largest margin of the game, 13 points, 41-28 before taking a 12 point advantage into the start of the fourth quarter.

Smith and the Indians defense would put the game away in the first four minutes of the final quarter, with the Montgomery Central defense not giving up a point for almost four minutes, while Smith scored seven straight points to build their largest lead of the game, 19 points at 48-29.

Greenbrier would score nine of the next 12 points to cut the margin back to 13 points, with 19 seconds left, but Montgomery Central’s Trey Spencer would close out the night’s scoring with a layup for the 53-28 final.

In the first quarter, Montgomery Central opened the game by taking a 4-0 lead, but saw Greenbrier take the lead 5-4 on a three by C.J. Bryant.

The Indians would retake the lead, and build that advantage out to 11-6 before the Bobcats would go on a 6-0 run to take a 12-11 lead prior to a free throw by MCHS’ Jordan Nelson to tie the game after the first eight minutes of play 12-12.
