Clarksville, TN – With the Christmas break looming ahead, local boys basketball teams are lighting up courts with heated competition. District play began last week. Some teams welcomed the chance to get an early edge on their district opponents while others squandered the opportunity.
Last season’s District 10-AAA regular season and tournament champions look like they want to repeat already. The team keeping up with the pace set by the champs so far is finding ways to win close games, surprising everyone.
The hottest team right now is competing in District 11-AA. The Montgomery Central Indians (7-1) have lost only one game so far this season. The Indians won three games last week to extend their current win streak to five games. After defeating Greenbrier, 53-38, Monday, December 1st, the Indians went on to take down district opponents Hickman County and East Hickman on Tuesday and Thursday.
The 2013-14 District 10-AAA Champion Kenwood Knights are running with six upperclassmen this season including senior Herbert Nelson and returning junior Matthew Norl. The experienced depth is paying off as the Knights (5-2) racked up two district wins on the road last week. First, they charged past Henry County, 48-36. Then, they put down the Springfield Yellow Jackets, 60-52. The wins extend a current win streak to three games.
After a rough start to the season, the Northwest Vikings (3-5) won two close games last week to start 2-0 in district play. Elijah McCoin made a last second shot from half court to give the Vikings the 47-46 win over the Rossview Hawks Tuesday, December 2nd. Next, Dezman Stacker scored 18 points and helped his team make a last second defensive stand to ground the Northeast Eagles Friday, 43-41.
The Northeast Eagles loss to rivals Northwest came after a win over the Clarksville High Wildcats, 44-41, on Tuesday. Both the Wildcats and the Eagles finished 1-1 in district competition last week.
The Henry County Patriots (4-4) and Springfield Yellow Jackets (3-4) went 1-1 in District 10-AAA play last week as well. After losing to the Knights, 36-48, the Patriots broke a two-game losing streak by defeating the West Creek Coyotes 64-61. The Yellow Jackets also defeated the Coyotes and lost to the Knights last week.
Like the Coyotes (1-9), the Clarksville Academy Cougars have put together only one win. The Cougars (1-6) lost three games last week against LEAD Academy, Davidson Academy and Jo Byrnes.
Henry Co. 1-1
West Creek 0-2
