Clarksville High Wildcats hand Northwest Vikings first District 10-AAA loss in double-overtime thriller

Clarksville High School WildcatsServall Termite & Pest ControlClarksville, TN – Two free throws by JJ Jones with 1.7 seconds left in double overtime, Friday, December 12th at William Workman Gymnasium, capped a 12-point rally by Clarksville High School, as the Wildcats handed Northwest High School its first District 10-AAA loss of the season, 91-86.

Clarksville High (5-5, 2-2 District 10-AAA) trailed the Vikings 51-39 heading into the fourth quarter, but scored 12 of the first 14 points of the period – including seven by Avery Bates – to cut the deficit back to just two points, 53-51, with 5:48 left in regulation.

Bates would finish with 23 points for CHS.

Northwest (4-7, 3-1 District 10-AAA) would push its lead back out to six points, 59-53, following two free throws by Elijah McCoin – who finished the game with game-high 35 points — with 4:32 and still lead by as many as five points, 61-56, with 2:47 left in regulation.

Cameron Stiff would follow by scoring five straight points in a span of seven seconds to tie the game 61-61, with 2:24 left.

Stiff scored 15 points for the Wildcats.

McCoin and JaRyan Young – who scored 33 points on the night – combined to score the next six points for the Vikings to allow Northwest to retake the lead 65-61, with 1:23 left.

A three-point field goal by Teal Young would start a 6-0 run for the Wildcats, as they took a 69-67 lead, with 15.6 seconds left in regulation – the first lead for CHS since they led 32-30 with 6:04 left in the third quarter.

But the Vikings would force overtime with two free throws by Young, who was fouled on a rebound of a missed shot, with 2.4 seconds left, to tie the game 69-69.

In the first overtime period, Northwest would take the early advantage by scoring the first four points and lead the entire extra period until Stiff tipped in a rebound as the horn sounded to force a second extra period, tied at 77-77.

The second overtime period would see the Wildcats score the first four points – to take their first lead over the overtime periods – with Northwest scoring the next four to tie the game 81-81.

A bucket by Young would give CHS the lead back, and one they would hold until Northwest would tie the game for the final time, 86-86, with 26 seconds left following a bucket by Young.

Clarksville High would take the lead for good on a three-point play by Bates, with 15.1 seconds left, but had to withstand a final shot attempt by the Vikings – who missed – with Jones getting the rebound and sealing the victory with two free throws.

In the first half, the two teams went back-and-fourth in the opening quarter with 10 lead changes before the Wildcats came away with a 19-16 advantage after the first eight minutes of play.

Clarksville High would build its lead out to as many as five points in the second quarter, before the Vikings started to chip away at the Wildcats lead and then taking a 29-27 lead into intermission.

The second half would see an early burst by CHS to give the Wildcats a 32-30 lead, with 6:04 left in the period, but the final six minutes the Vikings outscored Clarksville High 21-6 to take their biggest lead of the game, 12 points, heading into the fourth quarter.
