Land Between The Lakes Bison Auction Set for January 31st

Land Between the Lakes - LBLGolden Pond, KY – A public auction to reduce the size of Land Between The Lakes’ bison herds will be held on Saturday, January 31st, 2015.

The sale begins at 9:00am Central Standard Time at the Elk & Bison Prairie corral. Bidder registration, final sale list, and viewing begin at 8:00am. Bison purchases may be made with cash, credit card, or personal check at time of bid acceptance.

The Elk & Bison Prairie corral is located on the east side of Woodlands Trace National Scenic Byway (KY 453) just north of US68/KY80. GPS coordinates:  N36 47’ 27.4” W88 3’ 54.1” Golden Pond, Kentucky.

Because of the size and temperament, closed-topped trailers or vehicles are required to transport bison. Once bison step off the loading chute and into a buyer’s trailer, the animal becomes the property and responsibility of the buyer.

Bison must be loaded by the buyers immediately following the auction. For an additional $20.00 fee per animal, arrangements can be made at time of payment to load bison Monday, February 2nd, between 8:00am and 10:00am only.

The Forest Service has scheduled 38 bison to be sold individually to include 3 cows born between 1998 and 2006, 1 large young bull born in 2012, 6 yearling heifers born in 2013, 9 yearling bulls, and a mix of 19 bull and heifer calves born in 2014.

All animals come from a tuberculosis accredited herd and will be tested for brucellosis and certified by a licensed veterinarian before the auction.

Preliminary details regarding the age, sex, and weights of all animals to be sold will be available after Tuesday, January 27th, with the final list available at 8:00am on day of sale. For a preliminary list or any questions, call Curtis Fowler at 270.924.2061 or email ffowler@fs.fed.us.

Two herds of American Bison are managed at Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. All bison bloodlines originated from three sources – in 1969 from Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota, in 1988 and 2012 from Fort Niobrara National Wildlife refuge in Nebraska, and in 1996 from Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota.

An on-site veterinarian will issue Health Certificates as required for interstate transport immediately after the auction. Import permits will be on hand for the states of Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Alabama, and North Carolina.

Know the rules of your state BEFORE you buy. Some states have specific requirements as to age and vaccinations. If you need a different state import permit than listed, contact Curtis Fowler at 270.924.2061 on or before Monday, January 26th, for it to be available at time of sale.

Additional services may be purchased from the on-site veterinarian by cash or check to include vaccinations at time of bid acceptance. Know what vaccinations are required for your state.
