Dover, TN – Northwest High School girls basketball team had a chance at its third win of the season, Monday, December 29th at the Bill Craig Memorial Gymnasium in the final day of the Stewart County Rebel Christmas Classic, but missed three throws and layups came back to haunt the Lady Vikings in a 42-40 loss to Cheatham County Central High School.
Tied 40-40, the Lady Vikings (2-13) had a chance to retake the lead with 1:40 left, with Dashia Huey going to the line to shoot a one-and-one free throw after being fouled, but she missed the front end of the attempt keeping the game tied.
Cheatham County (8-5) missed a shot on its next possession, followed by both teams committing turnovers.
Final, the Lady Cubs would take the lead, 41-40, with 38.7 seconds left in regulation on a free throw by Savannah Worlund.
Worlund would lead Cheatham County with 16 points.
Northwest would bring the ball down, with Skyler Dixon drawing a foul with 22.9 seconds left and a chance to give the Lady Vikings the lead back with two free throw attempts.
She would miss both free throws, with Cheatham County getting the rebound, but the Lady Vikings would force a turnover giving them one final chance.
Northwest would miss a running jumper, but Dixon would get the rebound and put the ball up for what looked like the go-head bucket, but the ball went about two-thirds of the way down the basket before rolling back out with the Lady Cubs getting the rebound.
A foul by Northwest would put Josie Bumpus on the line for Cheatham County, with 1.6 seconds left, with a chance to make it a three-point game.
She would miss the first and make the second to push the Lady Cubs lead to two points, but leave the door open for a miracle tie, or winning final shot for Northwest.
But the prayer wasn’t to be for the Lady Vikings, as their final three-quarter court heave at the basket was short and wide to the left, to allow Cheatham County to escape with the 42-40 victory.
In the first half, the game looked like it would be a blowout with Cheatham County holding Northwest scoreless in the opening quarter – while taking a 10-0 lead after eight minutes of play.
The Lady Vikings would score the first eight points of the second quarter to get back into the game, 10-8, but never got any closer than that in the first half and trailed by five points at halftime, 17-12.
After intermission, the two teams would play an even third quarter – despite Northwest taking a brief lead in the period, 24-23, before heading into the final quarter down five.
The game would be tied two more times, including the final time 40-40.
The Lady Vikings are now off until after the new year, when they return to District 10-AAA action on January 6th with a 6:00pm road contest at Kenwood High School.
