Cannon Campbell’s final salvo lifts Rossview Hawks to overtime victory over Clarksville High Wildcats

Rossview High School HawksServall Termite & Pest ControlClarksville, TN – Rossview High School’s Cannon Campbell scored the final eight Hawks points against Clarksville High School — including six in overtime, Tuesday,  January 20th at William Workman Gymnasium, as the Hawks defeated the Wildcats in a District 10-AAA contest, 42-38.

Cannon, who finished with a game-high 18 points, put Rossview (11-7, 3-6 District 10-AAA) up quickly in the overtime period on a driving layup just 19 seconds into the overtime.

Tyriek Cheatham would tie the game 38-38 for Clarksville High (9-9, 6-3 District 10-AAA) with his only bucket of the game, with 2:59 left in OT.

Both teams would have chances to take the lead in the final couple of minutes, but missed shots and turnovers kept the game deadlocked, as the clock ran down to the final minute.

Much like Clarksville High did at the end of regulation, Rossview held the ball to take a possible game-winning shot, as the final seconds ticked off.

Campbell would drive to the bucket – but miss the shot.

But on the rebound attempt, with four seconds left, JJ Jones was called for a foul on Campbell – as he was knocked to the floor.

Campbell would knock down both free throws to put the Hawks up 40-38, followed by Clarksville High calling a timeout to set up its final attempt.

Needing to go the length for a game-tying shot, the Wildcats long inbounds pass was intercepted by Campbell – who was then fouled again, with 1.4 seconds left.

Campbell would then seal away the victory for the Hawks by hitting both and giving Rossview the four-point win, 42-38.

The win also marked the first time this season the Hawks had won a district contest that was decided by five points or less, with five of the six Rossview district losses coming by a combined total of 16 points.

In the first half both teams struggled to put points on the board, with Clarksville High holding a slim 15-13 advantage at intermission.

The third quarter would see the Wildcats still lead by three points, 20-17, with 5:36 left in the period, but Campbell would score six of the next eight points in the contest to give the Hawks a 23-22 lead at the 2:43 mark.

Rossview would add five more points to build its biggest lead of the game, 28-22, before Clarksville High scored in the final 43 seconds in the period to trail the Hawks 28-24, heading into the final quarter.

The Wildcats would come out strong to start the final quarter, scoring 10 of the first 14 points of the period to take its final lead of the game, 34-32, following a bucket by Teal Young with 3:40 left in regulation.

Jay Glenn would tie the game on the Hawks next possession, with Campbell giving them the lead 36-34 with 2:22 left.

Jones would tie the game for the final time in regulation with a bucket at the 2:03 mark, with Tariq Silver missing a three-point attempt at the end of regulation and setting up Campbell’s overtime heroics.

Both teams return to District 10-AAA action at 7:30pm on January 23rd, with Clarksville High hosting Kenwood High School and Rossview traveling to Springfield High School.
