Big second half lifts Northwest Vikings Basketball past Clarksville High Wildcats

Northwest High School VikingsServall Termite & Pest ControlClarksville, TN – Northwest High School scored 42 points in the second half against Clarksville High School, Tuesday, January 27th at the Willard Ross Memorial Gymnasium, as the Vikings rallied to defeat the Wildcats in a District 10-AAA showdown, 68-59.

The Vikings (14-9, 8-3 District 10-AAA) entered the second half trailing the Wildcats 32-26, but exploded out of the gates quickly after intermission by scoring 10 of the first 12 points of the second half – including four each from JaRyan Young and Marice Wright – to take their first lead of the game since the opening minutes of the game, 36-34.

Young would finish with a game-high 19 points, while Wright added 10 points.

Clarksville High (9-11, 6-5 District 10-AAA) would cut the lead back to one point a couple of times in the quarter, including for the final time, 38-37, following a bucket by Cameron Stiff with 4:23 left in the period.

Stiff would lead Clarksville High with 14 points.

But that would be as close as Clarksville High would the rest of the way, with Northwest building as much as a seven-point lead, 49-42, in the third quarter before holding a 49-44 advantage heading into the final eight minutes of play.

It would still be a five-point game, 51-46, as late as 5:53 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Vikings took complete control of the game with a 8-0 run over the span of 1:23 take its biggest lead of the game, 59-46, with 4:21 left in the contest.

The Wildcats would try to claw back into the game — getting as close as eight points — 59-51, following a three-point play by JJ Jones with 3:11 remaining.

But Clarksville High couldn’t contain Young and Elijah McCoin down the stretch, as the pair scored seven of the final nine points tallied by the Vikings over the final 2:53 to hold for CHS for the 68-59 victory.

In the first half, the two teams traded the lead back-and-fourth over the first 4:30 of the game, but Clarksville High got back-to-back 3 from Teal Young and Tariq Silver to take a 13-6 lead – with just under three minutes to go in the opening quarter.

The Wildcats would lead by seven points at the end of the first quarter and hold that advantage as late as the 2:49 mark of the second quarter, 23-16, but the Vikings closed out the first half by outscoring Clarksville High 10-9 to trail by six at intermission, 32-26.

Both teams return to District 10-AAA action at 7:30pm on Friday, January 30th, as the Vikings host Kenwood High School and Clarksville High travels to West Creek High School.
