Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – Marshun Newell scored 23 points and grabbed 17 rebounds while Alex Anderson added 19 points to lead UT Martin to a 76-64 victory against Austin Peay State University, Thursday night, in Dave Aaron Arena.

UT Martin improved to 14-8 overall and 6-3 in the OVC while the Govs lost their third straight home game to fall to 7-16 overall and 2-7 in the OVC.

APSU fell behind early by eight points but were able to scramble back into the game, trimming it two points on three different occasions.

But poor Govs free-throw shooting (3-of-9 in the opening half) allowed the Skyhawks to take a 29-24 lead into intermission as Newell did much of the damage with 14 points.

After Chris Horton opened the second half with a bucket to trim the lead to 29-26, UT Martin went on an 18-0 run, fueled by Anderson, who hit scored eight points in the four-minute span, to give the Skyhawks a 47-26 advantage with 14:02 remaining. It was a deficit the Govs could not recover. Any time the Govs posed a challenge, the Skyhawks responded, twice with Newell nailing a three pointer.

Josh Robinson, who had just two points at halftime on 0-of-4 shooting, finished with a team-high 15 points for the Governors. He was 8-of-9 from the free-throw, while the rest of the Govs went an unseemly 6-of-14 (43 percent).

Chris Horton saw his double-doubles streak end at five. Still he finished with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Like a broken record the Governors could point to shooting woes for their demise. For the 15th time this season they shot below 40 percent, going 21 of 54 (39 percent). Meanwhile, UT Martin became the third straight Govs opponent to shoot greater than 50 percent, knocking down 26 of 49 (53 percent), including 8-of-7 (47 percent) from three-point range.

With Newell’s 17 grabs, UT Martin out-rebounded APSU by a 37-30 margin, although the Govs had more second-chance points, 18-12.
