Clarksville’s Burt-Cobb Community Center to remain open as Emergency Shelter through Saturday night

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – The emergency shelter at the Burt-Cobb Community Center will remain open through Saturday night.

“Over the last week, our community overcame several obstacles to make sure there was adequate shelter space for people who needed a place to stay,” said Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan. “The accumulation of ice and snow combined with the current frigid temperatures made road conditions extremely hazardous.”

“Our system for communication and cooperation with our community partners worked just as it should; we responded by opening the Burt-Cobb Community Center to deal with a situation where a shortage of beds was likely,” stated Mayor McMillan. “However, now that the Room in the Inn volunteers can get to their churches, we are confident that they will be able to meet the needs for safe, warm and comfortable shelter.”

Working along with the Salvation Army and Buffalo Valley, the Room in the Inn program provides a strong foundation for assisting people in the Clarksville community, especially homeless people. Beginning Sunday night, a sufficient number of beds will be available so that the need for additional emergency shelter at Burt-Cobb is unnecessary.

“I want to thank all of the volunteers who work with the Room in the Inn program. I have heard that many of them are anxious to get back to the work of providing shelter, work that is important to our community and the churches that take part,” said Mayor McMillan. “I also want to thank the Salvation Army and Buffalo Valley, both of which have been operating at full capacity during the week. Finally, I want to again thank our Parks and Recreation staff and the volunteers who have worked with Manna Café to assist with the emergency shelter at Burt-Cobb.”

Anyone who will need shelter after Saturday night should contact the Old Firehouse Day Shelter located at 1498 Golf Club Lane by 4:30pm Monday – Friday to make arrangements.

After hours or on the weekend, contact Buffalo Valley at 931.206.7608.
