Austin Peay Sports Information
Rock Hill, SC – Austin Peay State University’s softball team couldn’t shake off the rust of a 15-day weather induced layoff Saturday, February 28th in the opening day of the Winthrop Adidas Tournament, with the Lady Govs falling to Appalachian State 13-7 and to Winthrop 11-3.It was the Lady Govs (1-8) pitching and defense that seemed to show the most tarnish from the inactivity, giving up 35 hits in the two games – including 12 for extra bases – while defensively committing four errors.
Offensively, Austin Peay fared better in scoring 10 runs on the day, coming on 16 hits, including five home runs.
In the opening game versus Appalachian State, the Lady Govs were down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning before getting on the board on a solo home run by Niya Sparks.
The Mountaineers would score three more times in the top of the third inning, to go up 7-1, followed by the Lady Govs second home run of the game – this time coming from Laurel Burroughs – to make it 7-2.
Austin Peay would add a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, without benefit of a hit, with Mel Pavel driving in Chandler Groves with a sacrifice fly to center field to get cut the margin to 7-3.
But Appalachian State (8-7) answered back in the top of the next inning with four runs to push its lead back out to eight runs, 11-3.
The Mountaineers would close out their scoring with two more runs in the top of the seventh to go up eight runs, with Austin Peay recording its final two home runs of the game – coming on back-to-back solo blasts from Christiana Gable and Sidney Hooper for the 13-7 final.
In the nightcap, Austin Peay was trailing Winthrop 1-0 heading into the top of the third inning, when Sparks tied the game with an RBI single – driving in Gable, who reached on a double.
Austin Peay would try to rally back by scoring two times in the top of the fourth inning, on a two-run single by Gable, to make it a one-run game, 4-3.
But that would be as close as the Lady Govs would get, with the Eagles closing out the game by scoring the final seven runs for the 11-3 final.
The Lady Govs will conclude their stay at the Winthrop Adidas Tournament on Sunday, March 1st, with a 9:00am, game versus Coppin State followed by a contest against Wagner at 11:00am.
