Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office gives Tips for Motorcyclist Safety

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office - MCSOMontgomery County, TN – After several recent motorcycle crashes, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public to be more aware of motorcycle riders and help ensure motorist safety.

“Now that the weather has improved, more riders are getting out on their bikes, and people may not be used to seeing them,” said Sgt. Jimmy Brown. “Drivers should retrain themselves to be more aware of these smaller vehicles.”

Brown said there were 150 motorcycle wrecks in Montgomery County in 2014.

He suggests drivers of every time be more observant of the road, including their blind spots, where motorcycles may be harder to see.

“Also, you may not think a motorcycle is going is fast as it is, as the speed can be deceiving,” Brown said, adding that one may be more inclined to pull out in front of a motorcycle because of this.

Motorcycle riders also have responsibilities. They can do several things to make sure they are more visible, including wearing brighter colors so they are more noticeable.

“After this weekend’s crashes, it made me think twice about what I was going to wear when I went out on my bike. I decided to switch from a black shirt to a bright green one,” Brown said.

Riders should be aware of what’s going on 12 seconds ahead of them, such as looking beyond the car that’s in front of them, which may help them avoid problems ahead.

“We hope that all Montgomery County citizens on the streets will use these tips to help prevent another tragedy on our roadway,” said Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson. “Being more aware of your own surroundings can save yours or someone else’s life.”

Traffic Tips

  • To be safer on the roads, motorcyclists should consider:
  • Avoiding hazardous road conditions, potholes, wet leaves and other conditions when riding.
  • Avoid trailing larger vehicles, as they are more difficult to see around.
  • Never share a lane with a car, the driver may not expect you to be there.
  • Clearly signal your intentions to other drivers.
