APSU Lady Govs Softball plays doubleheader at home Wednesday against Samford Bulldogs

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team will play host to former Ohio Valley Conference member Samford University for a 1:00pm, Wednesday doubleheader at Cheryl Holt Field.

The twinbill will be just the second meeting between the two programs since the Bulldogs left the OVC after the 2008 season and the first time the two have met in the Queen City since March 31st, 2007.

Austin Peay (3-17, 2-5 OVC) will be the fourth OVC team the Bulldogs (20-11, 2-1 Southern Conference) have faced this season, with Samford beating Murray State, 6-5,  February 14th;  losing to SIU Edwardsville 7-2, February 28th, before dropping a doubleheader to Tennessee Tech, March 18th, by scores of 8-7 and 10-5.

Offensively, Christiana Gable leads the Lady Govs with a .377 batting average five doubles, six home runs and 23 RBIs.

Laurel Burroughs (.344/4 HR/ 14 RBI) and Niya Sparks (.300/5 HR/13 RBI) also are batting .300-or-better on the season.

Additionally, Rikki Arkansas and Courtney Brower are coming off their respective best weeks of the season as they both hit at a .353 clip in seven games last week.

In the circle, Natalie Ayala leads the APSU pitching staff with a 2-6 win-loss record, with a 7.97 ERA and 12 strikeouts.

Allie Blackwood (1-3, 8.12 ERA, 15 K’s) has the other win for Austin Peay this season.

For the Bulldogs, Megan Dowdy (.442/0 HR/12 RBI) leads the Samford offense, while Abby Sweeney (.383/7 HR/18 RBI) provides most of the team’s power.

Hollie Hanson is the workhorse for the Samford pitching staff, coming in with a 11-6 mark and a 4.07 ERA and 72 strikeouts.
