Jonesboro, AR – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team showed resiliency Saturday during the first day of the 19th Annual A-State Red Wolves Intercollegiate, being played at the RidgePoint Country Club.
Struggling with a first-round 19-over 307—they were forced to count a pair of 80s—the Governors bounced back with a 2-over 290 in the afternoon, moving from 12th to an eighth-place tie at 597 heading into Sunday’s final round.Illinois State leads the tournament at 585, one shot ahead of Belmont.
In the afternoon, sophomore Erik Hedberg and freshman Justin Arens each first 1-under 71s after struggling in the morning (Hedberg had an 80 and Arens and 81)—Hedberg was playing his first spring rounds as a team member. However, it was junior Chris Baker the Govs’ low player of the day after shooting 72 and 73, for a 1-over 145. He is tied for seventh individually.
Senior Tucker Wallace shot 151 (75-76) on the day while Austin Kramer, the Govs’ No. 1 golfer all season, had an uncharacteristic 80 in morning and a 75 in afternoon for a 155—all five Govs’ golfers were no worse than 76 in the afternoon.
“I like the way we finished this afternoon’s round,” APSU coach Robbie Wilson said. “Justin and Erik came back strong and Baker just played consistently all day.
“Tee shots hurt us in the morning, with us hitting some balls out of play. We have to do better Sunday, but if we do I think we can post a good number.”
