Murray, KY – After being limited to just one round in Richmond, KY, last weekend, Austin Peay State University women’s golf team hopes to dodge the weather pratfalls this weekend when it participates in the MSU Invitational, to be played at Miller Memorial Golf Course.
It will be APSU’s last event before the Ohio Valley Conference championship, April 20th-22nd, at Hampton Cove on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Huntsville, Alabama. The Murray State event will feature multiple OVC teams.
In addition to the hosts and the Lady Govs, Belmont, Morehead State, SIU Edwardsville, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech will be there along with Butler, Cincinnati, Marshall and Xavier in the 11-team field.
Last weekend’s Colonel Classic, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was limited to just one 18-hole Saturday round. The Lady Govs took seventh in the event, with freshman AnnaMichelle Moore (78) and sophomore Morgan Gardner (79) leading the way.
“It was unfortunate that our event last week was shortened to one day, the girls were looking forward to a good event,” Sara Robson said. “We’re going into Murray looking to gain some momentum for the OVC Championship. We need to play confident golf and fight on every shot.”
Robson will use the same young lineup this weekend that she has used in the most recent events, with junior Jessica Cathey, sophomores Gardner and Morgan Kauffman and freshmen Moore and Anna Pope.
In addition, three other Lady Govs—senior Meghan Mueller, sophomore Kelsey Schutt and freshman Sarah Struble—will play as individuals. Robson has watched her team show steady improvement of late.
“Our short games need to be strong while we stay patient,” Robson said. “Some of the girls need to work on starting strong and a few need to work on finishing. We will seek to provide the guidance in these areas to see if that will make a difference in our scoring this week.”
